Leave the pointless exceptions to marc.

Is Graeme Smith still a flat track bully if he hits Hoggard for 4 on a seaming pitch? Yes, but you can be sure someone tedious like marc would waste everyones time point this exception out.
What've you just effectively said that because he scores against Malta and the like he's a flat track bully....regardless of if he scores against anyone else. But you'd be slagging him off even more if he couldn't score against Malta....

A flat track bully performs well or gets good results against the really crap sides but struggle virtually every time they come up against decent, quality opposition. If chief poseur didn't fill his boots against the likes of Malta he'd just be a typical poor international player or average club footballer, instead he's a flat track bully.

Hmm, I click on the "English thread", and I find Scalys vendetta against the sublime Henry carrying on here8-)

Still, my england side would be:

Robinson

Carragher
Terry
Ferdinand

Beckham, right wing-back
Ashley Cole, left wing-back

Gerrard
Lampard
Joe Cole

Crouch
Owen

Solves the left-wing problem and utilises our strengths in midfield and centre-backs.

I am also encouraged by Walcott, Lennon and Downings place in the squad, they're pacy, young and exciting:)

Beckham destined for yet another red then? :D

He simply can't tackle...

Following yesterday's showing, who would go with Ashton over Crouch? Both had similiar jobs to do yesterday, one did his, the other clowned around for the whole game.

Crouch setup Gerrard's first volley and had a perfectly good goal ruled out... given how useless Cisse and Kewell were that's as much as you could expect.

Ashton can certainly spot a pass, that's for sure - a good effort and I'm sure he'll be a future England player!

I thought there wasn't a left wing problem now that Joe Cole is world class player?

Well without Rooney I would like Cole to play more centrally really, hes the closest thing to Rooney that we have now.

As for the "Beckham can't tackle" *gets into cumudgeonly old man mode*, no-one tackles nowadays, they just flap around in front of the winger, Beckham can do that fairly effectively.

very impressed with Gerrard performace in the FA Cup final, he gives Sven an option as a foward which is very good. Also after Campbell's performance tonight he has got to start along with Terry in the heart of the defense.

Overall since its fair to assume that Rooney will not be playing in the group stages i would still go for the 4-5-1 formation.

Following tonight's performance, I'd take Henrik Larsson.

On a posotive note from todays dissapointing final Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell both came through 90 minuites pretty well i thought.

Pedro Delgado

International Debutant
Cole played really very well, encouraging. Sol was done like a kipper for the Eto'o chance where he hit the post, but I put that down to super play from the African; good players create chances for themselves. Otherwise he did well too aye. I'd still go with JT and Rio though to start.
Need to see how Owen fairs in the friendlies now.

Rooney will be fit, guys, I've got a feeling. It's not based on anything other than blind faith, though. :p

Keep believing, people!
