Tait changing his action?

It was obvious that he was trying to adopt a more "conventional" bowling action in the Perth test. And it was even more obvious to me that he was trying to be more upright at delivery point, not his usual all over-the-shop self.

This, to me is one of the disadvantages of over-coaching in our game. Here we have one of the most exciting fast bowlers in a long time with an unconventional action. He is very effective with this action. However, it appears to me that the coaches are trying to make him develop a more stock standard action.

My advice to Tait would be to go back to your old self and don't worry about being too front on at delivery point like the coaches are encouraging him to do at the moment. If he is effective very side on and with his head low at delivery point giving him more pace, then let him be.

Said coaches are probably more concerned with his action doing his body no good though.. Probably more than a cricketing decision

Still, I would want him to generate as much pace as he can until he's about 25-26, then think about re-developing his action. Why have another bowler whose maximum pace would be 145kph when you can have an unpredictable bowler bowling at 160kph? Might as well have Mark Cameron in the Aussie squad...8-)

Doubt very much that he's making serious changes to his action at the behest of CA. The way we saw him bowl, I've seen him do plenty of times for SA. To bowl certain typesof balls, he just changes how his arms move. Freddie Flintoff does too just more subtle.

Perhaps he's trying to improve his accuracy or something? The old Shaun Tait was never going to be world class when he's so unpredictable. To be the best you must be consistent. Then again I could be harsh as I've never rated him much. Guys like Clark have impressed me more.

Saw some footage of him bowling in the nets this evening, where he had the ball facing the batsman when he reached drew his arm back, rather than the back of the hand like he used to do.

Yeah now he's developing a similar action to Lee's old action (where he stuck the ball out in front of the batsman before delivering it).

If that was Tait with a conventional action...I can't tell the difference.

I assume you're talking about his action similar to the ball which gets Jaques in this footage?

If so, he's always done it on occasion when he wanted to bowl a really quick ball. I have seen him do it for whole spells too.

Hmm, interesing. Just watching footage of the 2005 Ashes and he has the ball facing the batsman all the time.

Did he change and now attempting to change back?

As for changing his action. Tweaking and tinkering is fine and wise. A major overhaul is dangerous and foolish. His action is what allows him to do what he does. Would hate to see him as a 140kph bowler outside Test cricket.
