The great George who spotted FST in his first net session.

(Actually, that story is as apocryphal as "you guys are history" and "Hersch, you've just dropped the World Cup")

From one legendary Yorkshireman to another. :)

George Hirst may or may not have said it to Wilf Rhodes

Arthur Mailey or Bill O'Reilly

I have a feeling that AM was helping one of the opposition spinners on how to bowl at Bradman:unsure:
Mailey to the Australian manager who reprimanded him for helping the English leg spinner Peebles.

Yes, that is the full answer, although Richard was also correct:)

George said he never said these words, but Mr Cardus never let the exact truth get in the way of a good story:)

Okay I had better get these awards done:ph34r:

But here is another easy one:)

Every time Rich and I would look at each other in the dressing room after the match, we would burst out laughing

Name the match and the two players concerned

Hint: the match took place in the 60s

Possibly the ashes test in England where Richie Benaud took lots of wickets bowling into the rough outside the batsmen's leg stump. Maybe 1961? If I'm right, I suppose the other player could be any one of ten.

EDIT
OK, the game was in 1961, and it was at Old Trafford. England had reached 150 for 1 needing 256 to win, and Benaud did his round-the-wicket bit. Cue the last 9 wickets falling for about 50, and Aus retaining the Ashes.

Maybe the other guy was Wally Grout?

Seem to remember it as Harvey. Ditto about the rest.

When we started playing ... we used to improvise with maize cobs, using sticks as bats. We graduated to tennis balls and carved our own bats.

Who said this?
