Each batsman has his own style. his own pacing. his own strengths and weaknesses. a player like dravid is ideal to take on the bowlers when they are fresh and build an innings in his own time. an allan border on the other hand plays better when the match situation is defined and tapers his game according to the demands of the team. bats well with the tail and sweeps the spinners out of the rough.i never got the importance people placed on batting positions. like it is important to an extent regarding new balls, old balls, spinners and pace but the the importance some people put on it befuddles me. dravid being 3 or nothing is strange to me. whether your an opener, 3 or 6 you'll eventually face up to the exact same bowler in the exact same conditions, at various parts of your innings. all throughout one series. thats if youre any good mind you
see... there is no hard and fast rule i agree. an aggressive sehwag on top of the order or an aggressive gilchrist at no.7 can alter the game any way they want. similarly a dour dravid at 3 and a dour chanders at 6 can stabilise their team with equal impact. but still it is very important that a batsman bats in the position that benefits his team the most. there may not be much of a difference between numbers 4 and 5. but no 3 and no 6 are specialist positions and can't be so easily interchanged.
