Why's Ross Taylor playing. I'm not used to the captain playing in a warmup match at home. I guess if he feels as though he needs time in the middle and wants to gauge how the best of the rest are going, then it's the perfect opportunity

It's good to see, tbh. Hopefully as the captain and our premier batsmen, he asked to be included.

Probably also wants to watch some Zimbabwean bowlers and batsmen up close. Not taking it lightly, etc.

Has to be four bowlers + Vettori for the Test team. Agree with Flem that the Napier pitch is neither going to seam nor break-up during the match (based on previous years), so just pick your five best bowlers, no matter who they are.

McCullum
Guptill
Williamson
Taylor (c)
Brownlee
Vettori
van Wyk (wk)
Bracewell
Southee
Boult
Martin

WTF

Leaving aside he's never opened before, he specialises in rescuing innings from the brink down at six or seven.

I can't possibly think of a side that often needs rescuing from the brink in tests..
WTF x 2.

If you're auditioning a potential new keeper, why have him open? Surely there's no chance of him opening in the test, is there?

I get the feeling that Wright sees Watling as the first choice option, but I'm ****ed if I know why.

Two reasons - one negative one positive:

Negative - Wright is setting KVW up to fail so that he doesn't have to pick him in the test.

Positive - He wants to give Kruger every chance to play a big inning - and he wants to really test his mettle - so if he can succeed opening against Zimbos he can hack it against the south african attack with a 45 over old ball.

Ridiculous reasoning, considering that South Africa with a 250 over old ball would be much better than Zim with a new ball and bottle top to go with it.

Thought we were over all this ****. You only pick specialist openers for the opening position, FFS.

I love John Wright, but I'm calling him out on this.

Phlegm that radio segment where someone said Crowe was working with BJ Watling was so bad. There was so many callers from the public that had no idea about cricket. I'm pretty sure one guy was saying Reece Jones shouldn't be dropped and another guy said McCullum should be wicketkeeper. Then someone blindly stated that Hopkins was in the top 2 runs scorers of the HRV Cup.

In their defence, you also just called him Reece Jones...!!

I don't see what we're getting with van Wyk that we couldn't get with de Boorder, except for another 5-6 years in his career.
