***Official*** Sri Lanka in New Zealand 2015

NZTailender

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
What do we reckon the XI will be for Sri Lanka? Will they play two specialist spinners, two seamers and rely on Mathews? Or a more traditional 3 pacers/1 spinner + Mathews? Also Siriwardana. Although I guess having Siriwardana and Herath bowling might be a bit samey - so Perera might play instead of a third seamer. But I'd like them to play three seamers, personally.

1. D Karunaratne
2. Kusal Mendis
3. K Vithanage
4. D Chandimal
5. A Mathews (4)
6. T Siriwardana (6)
7. Kusal Perera+
8. R Herath (5)
9. S Lakmal (3)
10. D Chameera (2)
11. N Pradeep (1)

The leggie Vandersay a chance maybe? Took 12 NZA wickets in the two red ball matches.

SL got any off spinners in this squad. May make that useful looking (assuming he can also bend it in to RHBs) left armer from above a more likely selection.

There are two approaches to defending a full ball on middle stump.

1) The Tim Mcintosh solution. Move your front foot forward but open up your stance so that your front foot moves forward in line with leg stump. Hit the ball beside your front foot.
2) The Ross Taylor and Shane Watson Solution. Move your front foot directly towards the ball with a half step. Put your bat directly in front of your pad so that your pad and bat are in a straight line and not beside each other. Aim to hit the ball with the centre of the bat. If it seams inwards it will collect the inside half of the bat and run down to fine leg for a single. The ball will almost never seam away unless it is a jaffa - in which case the bowler deserves to get you out.

I favour option 2, after trialing option one for many years with different stances to assist me. Option 2 opens up your offside game because if the ball is pitches outside off stump you don't need to change where you are planting your foot very much ans you can play a drive with your bat and pad together at point of impact.

Option 2 took me 2 years to master to the point I can do instinctively. All bowlers in club cricket will bowl you a full and straight one early in your inning to see if you know how to defend. Usually in your inning you will only get 2-3 deliveries like that even if you make a 50 - so it is ok to pat each one back to the bowler*

* on occassion against a particularly canny bowler he noticed I patted two back to him in a row so he started firing everything in full and straight thinking he could bowl cheap overs to me. So I had to go to plan B which was to whack a few for four runs, which isn't hard to do a full and straight delivery since they are often half volleys.
Quality post.

I go for method a, with a bit of wristy bottom hand if i want to turn it into a single. If i don't get the feet moving i'll nick out, assuming off stump doesn't get taken out first.

That seems ridiculous tbh. Rated him.
In fairness his recent form has been pretty dire. Still though given how many games Thirrimanne and Mubarak got it's not like Sri Lanka are overflowing with good batsmen.

Surprised Roshen Silva hasn't got a game in that respect, record alone suggests a better specimen than Jayasundera or K. Mendis
