It was Superb ball, even our so called biased commentators thought so. The only really bad shot today was Symonds. Clarke perhaps as well but the ball did swing on him after some good pressure.
Symonds, Clarke and Gilchrist all played extremely poor shots even though Symonds and Gilchrist can really always be expected to play heaves and slogs. Australia need to seriously reconsider their numbers 6 and 7, Symonds seems to think that he has the license to bat like a moron and slog everything out of the park and I dont expect much other than maybe 1 50+ score from Gilchrist in this series.

I am sorry mate! He will score more than what you expect!

Must say my respect for Hayden went up a notch after today's play.

I was there for his ton on day 2 of the Boxing Day test back in 2003, but this one was just so much better. Against a much better attack, and he faced some class fast bowling first up, weathered it with only one genuine edge which went through a vacant third slip (I yelled a few expletives when that happened, no third slip for a second gully in the first hour was silly) and then was brillinat from then on.

Surprised he didn't go on with it tbh.
He now has more centuries than he has fifties. Quite rare for someone who has played so many innings.

If Zaheer Khan doesnt expose his weakness outside the off stump, then I am certain that Kumble and Harbhajan will expose his limitations against spin. Gilchrist has always struggled against quality spin bowling, he's had the odd good score but by and large hes been unable to maintain any sort of consistency against spin bowling.

Agree with you but I dont think he has much choice there.
Personally i think India would be better off picking a specialist opener and not a makeshift opener when playing abroad. Although, I personally believe that Sachin is far more likely to succeed as an opener than Dravid.

Dravid is better opener for India than Sachin. Had if Sachin is playing for Aussies, he would have been the opener along with Hayden.

The reason is simple... India would not risk Sachin's wicket with the new ball as Sachin's role in Indian batting line up is enormous. He is the confidence builder. Dravid can be better opener because he plays far too many less balls on the first up and that gives no chance for the bowlers to get deep in to the Indian batting order with the new ball.

wierd...you'd think now that they dug Sehwag up from obscurity, kept Karthik, Gambhir despite somewhat dodgy form and for a while there was even a bring back Chopra movement for a while, that the last possible thing move, moving Dravid possibly the most, settled in his position bat in the Iineup, up to the opening slot has actually hapenned.

Sachin's role in the Indian lineup is vastly different from his role in the mid-late 90s. Sachin is no longer the force he was back then, nor are his efforts this decade anywhere near comparable to those of Dravid at 3. Yet he seems to live a charmed life never having to relinquish his position based on his accomplishments from a previous decade.

Dravid may very well have the technique to succeed as an opener, but the problem is that he hasnt been able to do so and while that may be psychological, there is no reason to force him to do something which he clearly is not happy doing especially given his success at no 3 last time India toured here.

Well Sachin has been doing it for a long time in ODIs, but opening in Tests is obviously a whole another world. Ganguly has been a great ODI opener, but it would be madness for him to open in Tests. Obviously, Sachin has a far superior technique, one that is better than even Dravid's, but still I am not sure if Sachin, at this stage of his career, would be a better opener than Dravid. He might be the better choice as the opener, because you want to protect your best player a little bit, and certainly you want him to be comfortable with his role in the team.

In the end, I agree with you completely that a specialist opener is what's needed.

similar to when Saffers came here too a few years ago.. Aussies were all out before the day finished i believe...
Yea, but you always felt Australia always had SA number in any tight contest. Witht the Ashes & 2001 in India it was an unexpected surprise.

What a brilliant fight back from India!

That is how you play Australia! None of this 400-2 after day 1 rubbish.

Great day's cricket... absolutely brilliant. Awesome day at the G!

Hayden was brilliant, but Kumble was even better. What a bowler, what a captain!
My Dear Jono, yes it was a good fightback....however I fear the Indian batsmen will flatter to deceive.

I hope they make a lot of runs but something I have a bad feeling about this......are you going to the MCG today ?
If so, do you sit with the rest of the "Swami" Army ?

oh yeah batting promotions all around....
moot point exactly where Ganguly bats so long as he get's in b4 the tail and after the openers
You're clearly unaware that Ganguly has been India's best batsman for the last year or so then. You try to maximize those things.
And it's hardly a promotion. It's his incumbent position.
