Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
The bad light issue sums up why test cricket struggles to survive.

People are paying good money to turn up to watch games. TV companies are paying huge sums to televise games.

And yet, time after time across the world, play halts when it's perfectly playable. Yes, conditions might not be perfect but they are in no way dangerous so play should continue.

The lost count of the number of times I've sat in grounds in England when the light isn't perfect but playable, only to see the players troop off.

The authorities have to act on this. Cricket doesn't exist in its own bubble, it relies on the paying public and TV companies paying for it.

Play should only stop when there is absolutely no alternative as to continue would endanger players safety.
If all the players wore these, they'd never have to go off for bad light:

You are fast becoming the most miserable CWer despite stiff competition. Starting to embody the most punishing (acceptable) aspects of this site. I can't remember the last time I saw you make a happy cricket post that wasn't a mean reaction to a player or poster you don't like.

Unlike your competition for the misery guts crown you're capable of much better. Sort it out. Take time out if you need. It can't feel good to be so negative all the time.
Chill bro it was very obvious bait

So with a lot of people questioning whether the rain should mean the SCG should lose the New Years Test, I went through the last 30 or so years and looked at how the SCG fared weather wise in the New Years Test:

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...th-africa-3rd-test-1317494/live-cricket-score - Likely to lose a lot of play, and might make it near impossible to get a result

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...ia-vs-england-4th-test-1263465/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 60 overs

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-india-3rd-test-1223871/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 21 overs

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...lia-vs-pakistan-3rd-test-64115/full-scorecard - Lost the first session of play on Day 3

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-south-africa-2nd-test-63779/full-scorecard - Parts of Day 4 lost to rain

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-3rd-test-63665/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 88 overs

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-south-africa-2nd-test-63629/full-scorecard - Hard to tell - but seems parts of Day 2 were rain-affected?

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...-vs-west-indies-3rd-test-63592/full-scorecard - Draw, lost 42 overs (no idea if that was because of rain or over-rates and the flatness of the pitch not allowing for a result, though)

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...tralia-vs-india-3rd-test-63565/full-scorecard - Draw, apparently lost 94.1 overs on Days 3 and 4 due to rain

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...alia-vs-england-3rd-test-63545/full-scorecard - No notable rain (but was still a draw)

Seems to be very patternable, but the problem has gotten much worse in recent years. Before about 2015 you did get a number of rain interruptions but generally not significantly worse than anywhere else that didn't have an obvious seasonal rain pattern and usually you could still get a result. Since then, you've had two de facto washouts, one Test where rain made it difficult to get a result and 2-3 other Tests where a number of overs were lost because of rain.

I'll try compare it to oth1992ers at a later point, but certainly in the last decade it's to

ugh to think of many other places that have a worse rain record.
Going back to the 1980s even when it was rarely a New Years Test the Sydney Tests were impacted by weather.

The 83/84 Test v Pakistan had most of Day 1 washed out.

The 1985/86 Test v NZ had roughly a session washed out on Day 4.

The 1988 Bicentennial Test was impacted by bad light on Day 4 at the very least.

The 1989/90 Pakistan Test was ruined by bad weather with multiple days washed out. Even with a 6th day added they weren't able to complete two innings.

Just on those 90s matches, the Windies 92/93 Test was impacted by rain/bad light on Day 3, and possibly Day 4 as well.

The 1994/95 Ashes Test not only was impacted by bad weather regularly, but impacted England's quest to bowl Australia out on the final day as bad light prevented them from bowling their pace attack at the end.

Re: the 97/98 South Africa Test, it was actually raining as the final wicket was taken as if SA had held out for a few more minutes it would've gone into the final day.

International Captain
Usman Khawaja is the best opener in World cricket at the moment.
This is actually spot on the money. Usman has been a revelation since slotting into the ashes series last year, and as someone up thread said it's
amazing that just over a year ago Marcus Harris started off that series. Not sure what his figures are exactly in the last year but must be outstanding.
I'm sure it's not going to happen because it's probably not even in contention, but I reckon he'd be the man for the job for Australia at this years world
cup in India. In his last ODI series there his 5 scores were 50, 38, 104, 91, 100 so the Indian conditions would suit him well.
Not up to scratch whether he even wants to play or if he only plays test cricket now, but it's a shame for Australia because looking at those figures and
his current form, you'd have to think he'd be the best man for the job.
