Agree about Smith having more potential as a bowler, but I still think he is overrated.

Good onya aussies!

Will he be good enough for test cricket or do you think he is better off trying the Symonds route of a specialist LO player?

He looks like he has raw talent to burn so hopefully he will continue to develop.
No one whose batting technique is to predominantly stay leg side of the ball should ever be picked in an under 11s Rep side, let alone to play for Australia as a batsman or an all rounder.

We just have to scrap the last couple years from test history I think, the admin was all over the shop. Sri Lanka was a new beginning :)

Phil Hughes is probably in the same boat of akward technique but if they can pile on the runs maybe it's the modern way to give them a go.

I remember the story of M Slater getting coaching as a youngster where he would be rapidly instructed to play shots and focus only on technique and foot movement. Probably showed up in his test career and gives a player an edge later in their career. Cosgrove got the same kind of coaching from his pretty commited father, but I think he got a cookie for each good shot also.

Agree with Hughes, most definitely. But he's doing it far less now - you could see in SL he had worked on his trigger movement being back and across, not back and away.

See so many young blokes bat like it - they watch too much T20 **** ffs. Annoys me to pieces.

He'll get absolutely ruined playing constant limited overs cricket when what he needs is regular Shield cricket in order to define himself in the longest form of the game. His batting thus far is more potential than results but I reckon he'll be an extremely handy cricketer for Australia in limited overs; I'm quite suprised he didn't bowl today because I think he's an excellent T20 bowler.

Quite simply, CA really really seem to want Smith to be a slogger. And he ain't. He's pretty much never played a good T20 or OD innings, bar the one at the champions league when surprise surprise all he needed to bat sensibly. But yeah I rate him as a bowler. As a bowler being the keyword. Since that T20 WC, where he did finish in like the top 5 on the wicket board he pretty much hasn't been played as a bowler since. Bar those test matches in England. (oh btw, two tests in England as a bowler at 8, two test matches in Aus as 6 filling in as the spinner and another match at 7 filling in as the back-up spinner. get where i'm going?)

I personally feel we need to stop picking Smith for his benefit, because much like Moises Henriques and what we'll about to do with Mitch Marsh I don't think it helps one bit, calling them into international squads for no reason other than 'exp' and 'getting to know the set-ups' and giving them games with no real role.

I'm not quite sure how many times White has to bowl Dussey first and more often than SOK and Smith in these T20's for the selectors to get the message. Neither should be playing. btw.

well dussey is a decent spinner for t20. but it does go against everything the t20 team seems to stand for from the selectors point of view. eg if you're a young player with a bit of talent about we've booked your tickets.

Would probably be a good move for Smith to outright quit either batting or bowling, focus on one of the two tbh. As long as he stays as an "all-rounder" he's going to be treated in a pretty haphazard manner.

I actually disagree with that. Take a look at the career progression of Richie Benaud and Steve Smith and, LOI cricket aside, the parallels are incredible.

Yeah of course. Only way to cure the back-aways is to stand behind them in the nets pointing a stump at them.

Or angle a bowling machine at leg stump at about 60 mph (for under 10s, increase the pace as they grow up)

Sure DOCS doesn't like it, but they learn how to hook and pull properly. And that's the important thing.

Yeah exactly. Not sure why anyone would want to give the selectors less reasons to pick you.

Remember the coaches at my junior club used to put the kids kit bag behind them when they faced up.

The only shot kids ever hit hard enough to go for four or six is generally the pull shot anyway. Just defend everything else, and pull whatever you can, haha.

Used to put a stump along the back of the kids heels.
Yeah, each of these a good option, just don't get to see the fear in their eyes as much
