well this england batting lineup looks crap. Billings 4, Ali 5, Denly 6, T Curran 7 ugh.
One and a half first choice batsmen, depending on your opinion of Bairstow.

There is really no excuse for leaving Root out, it's overthinking in the extreme.

Edit: Overthinking from the fans. From the actual side, it's just not caring very much

Root plays the same role as Malan and won’t be treated as a squad player in this format when he’s test captain hence Denly coming in as he was part of the squad already. England have six frontline batsmen don’t get silly. I see you mean first
choice. Malan is nailed on as is Ali, plus Bairstow it’s 3. But you have a squad for a reason.

I could live with Denly when he was a possibility for the split-squads ODI side, but in a T20 where we could be full strength if we wanted to, I don't really see the point. The whole "he's just Ed Smith's mate" thing is a lazy way of glossing over that he was actually fairly useful to the test side, but it can probably be more accurately leveled at his continue LO career.

Just to get my 2 cents out there, I could take or leave Root in our full-strength line-up (although my mental image of full-strength still includes Hales, which probably isn't happening). He's definitely capable of the best type of T20 innings (2016 world cup vs South Africa), but IIRC the last few I remember him playing he either got out cheaply or ended up with some fairly bad run-a-ball 30s-40s. Could easily have chronology mixed up or just be plain wrong though

Really in this side Root bats 4 and plays instead of Denly. Ali 5, Billings 6. But guessing they didn’t want to make Root stay in the bubble as a squad player. England do look weak today. It would be nice to have Hales as an option but I don’t think we will see him play for England again.

Comical how weak our batting looks all of a sudden. I mean, it's likely with maybe your four best bats out for various reasons but still.

Noone can tell me Root shouldn't get in this side.

Plus with Denly carrying drinks all summer its a bit harsh calling Root or Hales up into the squad and not give Denly the chance.

Whatever it takes!!!
You guys are so busy discussing England that you forgot lolaustralia have gone in with ALL of Stoinis, Mitch Marsh, Maxwell, Agar and Zampa as well as 3 more quicks and Wade as the keeper. Only Finch and Smith as specialist batsmen who can both bowl too, lol.

Lol.. you finally think some of that jigsaw for England is starting to take shape with Bairstow not doing so well in T20Is recently and now he is showing why he should be around the best XI. :)

Yeah Root being able to actually spend some time with baby daughter is just so obviously more important than him playing this one match instead of Denly. Am sure he will be in the squad when we get to the next World cup.

That is an amazing caught and bowled from Agar. It looks so simple on the camera but an amazing piece of fielding there.
