Wouldn’t have mattered obviously, but I counted at least 4 forward passes in those Broncos tries. Two of which were so effing obvious. Disgusting. One was thrown at a meter line and the bloke received it 2/3 meters in front. Absolute joke

Good on Papali’i

Ladder looks pretty insane right now. 7-13 are covered by a single point.

I’d say the top 4 are definitely set for the 8. Sharks will make it and choke in the finals. 6-8 is a crapshoot that I hope the Panthers come through.

So, is the standard of the NRL really terrible this year, or the Wahs actually pretty good?
Very hard to say. Seems like a very even comp with a lack of the truly outstanding "class above" sides you'd usually see. Melbourne have been patchy so far but on paper they look most likely to be that side.

The Warriors look a pretty ordinary side on paper and by rights they should be out of the race with Barnett gone. I think what we are seeing is that teams are now all coached in such a similar style (and have such similar athletes) that apparent differences in "big name players" may be illusory and a lot comes down to how well coached and how disciplined they are. That certainly appears to apply to the Warriors, although no doubt there's also an element of solid players playing to their potential, and certain players being better than expected - particularly Metcalf, Clark, Halasima and Vaimauga imo. Decent players turning out to be potentially elite, and youngsters turning out to be very good first graders.

The salary cap has made the competition very even

The Panthers winning 4 in a row really is an incredible feat

Yes, although in the case of the Warriors, losing Harris and Walker permanently after finalising their roster for this year means they are operating way below the salary cap, which makes it all the more impressive (and that doesn't even account for Barnett's season-ending injury).

tbh I couldn't stand the way the 2020 Panthers played - I remember the first time I realised they might be a good side was when they beat the Warriors 26-0 in one of the most uninspiring games I've ever watched. At the time I said they were pretenders who didn't know how to attack, probably the worst call anyone's ever made about rugby league. Having said that though, to me they only became marginally more watchable over the ensuing 4.5 years and still played a largely very structured, efficiency-over-inspiration sort of game.

In the salary cap era though they probably had the blueprint - stack the squad with value for money locals before they become full-blown superstars, augment that with tough veterans, and play a highly disciplined style. Webster has brought that sort of philosophy from Penrith and may now have the right sort of ingredients to make it work.

I think Parra is two decent middles away from being a very competitive outfit now. One of those two should be Hopgood but he's playing like a busted these days, and has since his back injury. Tuiavati is a must retain. Deadset abominable start to the season is going to cots us a spot in the back half of the eight.

Need to find a way to give both Walker and Papaali big minutes, but I don't see how they do it with the current roster. Defence today was mostly exceptional given the ball Canterbury had. Penisini needs a nine iron to the skull. Been **** all year, today was no different.

not going to suddenly uproot my entire world view after a twenty minute stint but it has kinda entered into my brain that maybe just maybe i thought he wasn’t very good because he was at the tigers and playing stupid tigers gumby ball, and gus and co were right that he had all the tools all along and just needed to be somewhere more competent to unlock them
i’m not there just yet but it is possible
