ICC seriously considers 2 divisions,7/5 split.

I think that's true for almost any cricketing nation. Fans are bound to feel deflated if a team gets stuck in a rut.

Look at how many Sri Lankan fans we used to have here even 2 years ago when Sri Lanka were winning the World T20 and in England as opposed to now.

Did we even have Bangladesh fans here back in 06-07?

I mean the Netherlands? If they get RTD playing for them then I would watch. Ireland? Their bowling looked dibbly dobblyish. At least if it was Afghanistan I would be somewhat excited. Their bowlers are mint.

As much as I like playing Bangers - their pitches are attrocious. Would not be Good times.

You mean like the English football team?
International football doesn't really work as a comparison. As a fan of a club that stagnated then sank, I've seen attendances halve in a decade. Lower standards of competition will always see reduced interest

Imagine what Voges average would be if Aus played several minnows in succession...then again he might not get a chance to bat.

Maybe we need to encourage teams from 2nd tier into domestic leagues, Ireland counties in English CC, Afghanistan into Pakistan, Sheffield Sheild could have a PNG team (and maybe NZ......

I will always support my team..BUT it doesn't mean I have to be happy if I feel that they are not performing to their potential..If they are doing as well as they can and still not winning, then personally, I cant fault that..
having said that,i know lots of people as you say, will support their team while they are winning but then lose interest when they lose..

No one will actually admit to this but I think there's a kind of lethargy that sets in when your team keeps underperfoming. You don't actually make a conscious choice to stop supporting but you get detached.

What happens when India drops down to 7th? Do they play relegation? Or are the big three exempt?

I am on the fence and would like to read more opinions/posts from CW.

It is inevitable that NZ will one day end up in 8th spot. Our kids who are 8 and 9 years old seem to be very very impressionable. They either play or don't play based on what they see happening on TV.
If they watch two years of NZ vs Zimbabwe then I could see our young sign ups go down by as much as 30%. I myself started cricket because I saw it on TV and then marched up to my mother as an eight year old and said I wanted to play cricket.

We will lose as many as ten thousand kids from playing cricket during those drought periods. That is significant.

On the other hand, in the years when we are in top grade it will be a great shot in the arm for NZ cricket with all the tests we will get to play.

Yeah I am glad I am not NZC at the moment and having to give input on this.
The opposite is true as well though. A team like Ireland not promoted means we inhibit growth of new fans for the game and disillusionment of the old fans. The structure has some thing to look forward to for the teams which have been relegated. I think it is much better than seeing the team you support being beaten series after series.

I fully understand that. This was not meant as a criticism of fans at all. I have myself gone through all of that. Samuel Vines put it succinctly

Apparently the vote is in June.
BCCI will attempt to buy votes,so where will the votes go.
For someone like Zimbabwe they will play more tests, and thats not bad for a basket case.

On the flip side, might not a couple of years of consistent winning enthuse youngsters and get them keen to watch?

Sorry wasn't meant to come across like I thought it as a criticism buddy..it just meant to express that whilst my loyalty won't stop, it will be tested by **** performances so I agree with the original comment..

Yeah Marc is implying if NZ are in division 2 we'll be winning a lot and it may not be the case in division 1.

Think thats a reasonable assumption to make.

I still think ODI/T20 success is the best way to influence the really young fans. I don't know if I've met many fans who watched Tests at 8/9 if their family wasn't the one who got them into it.

not bad. A bit harsh on WI/NZ or whoever ends up being the 8th team though.

And Bangladesh have been making some real improvements, would suck for them. Though they might start winning Test matches which will be something for their fans at least.
It will usually be one of NZ/Pak/SL so I have no problem with that. Pak and SL barely play tests anymore and SL is pretty **** these days/
