The declaration while still being stupid would have had some logic if it was two bowlers like Anderson/Broad/Robinson batting. But Root was batting in a Godly mode and hitting sixes for fun. Then the declaration comes out which can't be explained by any means.

IMO, a declaration at any time is always stupid. Just hit out and get all out if you think you want to bowl at that time.

You know the worst part of all of this talk about "bazball" is that when it does come unstuck (as it inevitably will on occasions) the amount of revisionist bs that is going to be said will be next level.

If England continue to play test cricket this way, they are going to win tests that they never should and they absolutely will lose some that should never be lost. So the typical knee-jerk reactions to every win or loss has to be tempered to some degree.
I posted this 6 months ago.......the day has come (2nd time tbf actually) and here we are exactly as predicted. Take a pill, chill the **** down and get on for the ride imo.

It's not criticism of Bazball or agressive cricket, which I am a fan of. You can't do dumb****ery like this 1st innings declaration in the name of agressive cricket and escape criticism. This goes irrespective of the result. And this is 2nd such occasion this year.

Root was unbeaten at 150 odd in 2nd test against NZ too lol

Look I agree with you on the declaration and I'm not here to defend it. But I seriously don't think it was as dumb and without thought as people are making out.

We are seeing these declarations in pink ball tests where captain's feel there's more value in bowling that last hour than in batting. Right or wrong that's clearly what Stokes was thinking and as is his nature he took a punt on it.

Disrespecting the opposition and the game of test cricket be ****ed! Eng lost this test and the NZ test which can be pinned on Stokes captaincy......but let's keep in mind that both ended up sensational test matches that will live in the memory.....Lucky ***** those who happened to be in the grounds for them imo.

That's completely different though. The conditions themselves are radically different in that last hour under lights; the pitch didn't change one bit just because of the declaration, and Australia hadn't been worn out enough by England piling it on for four sessions for mental fatigue to come into play.

The declaration, while risky in hindsight, wasn't the biggest factor contributing to the result.Missed chances by Bairstow was the major difference between the sides.
Mate they forfeited 2 wickets for no reason in a 2-wicket loss. It’s like deliberately scoring 2 own goals in a 4-3 loss and saying ‘well the 2 deliberate own goals weren’t what mattered because the defending wasn’t great for the other goals’.

Guys, just take it easy. There's going to be more crazy decisions to come in the following tests, it comes with the territory with BazBall. Try not to get triggered.

Some bloke who wrote into the Cricket Etc podcast (Peter Lalor & Gideon Haigh) did some sums and reckons Bairstow's missed catches & stumpings cost 140-odd runs. With Bairstow scoring 98 runs in the test, he essentially made a negative contribution.
A real Marcus Harris from Bairstow last test.
