England axe 50 over domestic cricket

Jungle Jumbo

Further indication that 50-over cricket is dead and buried. Just a couple of years ago the FPT/C&GT was extended to give county players a better opportunity to play 50-over cricket. Now there will be none.

40-over cricket is financially much more successful and better suited to television. If you ignored the international context, there would really be no good reason to play 50-overs at all.

Can't say I'm too unhappy with the decision all-in-all.

50 over (international) cricket will continue to at least 2015 and I'm sure the likes of India and Pakistan will want it to continue even further than that.

Utter nonsense. More reason why the ICC needs to become a proper governing body ASAP. This is one of the worst things that could happen.

What's this got to do with the ICC?

South Africa don't have a 50 over comp and as the ECB said, that hasn't stopped them becoming the number 1 side in the world.

Ha, laughable decision. Another case of the tail (the counties) wagging the dog. We're trying to compete with other test nations with one hand tied around our balls.

Judging by the score in Belfast we need all the practice we can get too.

Honestly, how different is 40 over cricket to 50 over cricket? Those that defend it are clutching at straws, might as well bitch and moan about how 4 day CC games dont quite mirror international cricket as well.

Forget that this is a format which is rapidly diminishing in popularity and the t20 format is already starting to replace it.

Boards shouldn't be scraping 50 over cricket domestically, thats crap. Even if the standard isn't 100% on the same level as international cricket. How are players going to adapt to international cricket, if they dont play 50 over cricket domestically?

ENG ODI problems run deeper than just a poor standard of limited overs cricket domestically. English players from young aren't allowed to play with flare, like other nations. So its useless them trying to emulate the SA system.

Even if the 50 over limited game is a dying format, international 40 over cricket just doesn't exist. Surely it makes more sense to replicate the playing conditions for ODIs domestically as close as possible? I don't see any viable argument to the contrary.

Does seem to me to be a case of putting the cart before the horse - I don't have a strong view on whether ODI's should be 40 or 50 or any other number of overs but it's plain daft that domestic List A playing conditions should differ

I assume there will still be a final at lords for the competition? If not then it is a terrible decision. If so then I can live with it although am still not really in favour.

Not as if it's entirely unwarranted though. The counties support a 16-game Championship programme that makes them a loss, so they need to make the one-day stuff as commercially viable as possible.
Hardly surprising it makes a loss when there's **** all live cricket on terrestrial TV - there's more than enough money sloshing about thanks to the ECB selling their soul and breaking gentleman's agreements.

TEC is right...

I'm with TEC here. Also, Pro40 is far better to watch than the FP trophy. No question of that for me.

I do too, but I still don't see how playing a different format can be better preparation for the international game.

Unless we're giving up any pretence of treating ODIs seriously anymore.

Again, not hurting SA at all. Really don't have a problem. Just wish they would reintroduce some kind of carrot for us Minors...
