Both were declaration secnarios with two options. Whether to declare immediately or le a player go for a 50 and bat two excess overs.

The actual scenraios were vastly different.

Wouldnt Ponting be selfish if hPonting didnt allow Warne to get his 50?... If anything it's Selfless... Who's Ponting being selfish to exactly?

I also remember Taylor declaring on himself when he was on 334*, the equal of Bradmans Australian record at the time...

This is ridiculous. Ponting clearly told Warne he had a limited amount of time to work with, and Warne took it upon himself to get his 50 before the declaration. Once he got it, Ponting declared. It wasn't a case of Ponting delaying a declaration in order to get Warne his 50.

I think its only fair Ponting be stripped of the captaincy, Warnes 50 removed from the records and Pathan awarded a fifty. Hayden should be made to bat at 11 and Australia declare before he gets to face ball.

And Pratyush a nobel prize for picking up this outrageous discrepancy in Pontings answers to journalists that allways report things in the context of the question asked and never ever screw things around to make a story more interesting and likely to catch the eye.

:D :D :D

It is always surprising though how many people do buy these comments and actually start claiming things said in such comments as totally true.
well it seems to have got you hot under the collar

by far the most selfish innings of recent times would be brian lara's 400, sure it was a great innings, but it cost his team any chance of winning the game

Ponting was trying to get a total that NZ wouldn't get in 2 innings, or, at the very least wouldn't get within 150 of in the first innings.

Considering NZ scored over 400 in the first innings of the previous test, a follow on target of 420 was hardly excessive.

Time left? Yes, there was, potentially 220 overs left..for NZ to score 570 in. If rain intervened seriously ( as it did ), it was going to be a very tough, but by your argument, Aus should have declared at ~400 just in case it rained.

you dont declare just because theres a possibility of rain unless you have to, aus still would have drawn if they'd declared earlier

Exactly. Who knows what was going through Ponting's mind? He might have decided that he'd declare at the 140th over mark, conveyed the message to Warney, and then did exactly that.

They had no realistic chance of winning the game on that wicket.

Lara's 400 does not rank in the top 20 innings of all-time.

Possibly not. I actually think someone came up with some kind of logarithm to calculate the "best" AT innings, taking into account various factors. I'm too much of a mathematical dunce to know how much credence to place by it tho. Did Goochie's 154 against the Windies come out as #1? Or did I imagine that…

That said I do have some sympathy for BCL. He had the opportunity to make history & break new ground in doing so; set against that was slightly longer time to take 20 English wickets on a dead track to make the series 1-3 as opposed to 0-3. It was a selfish decision, but one which I think many of us would've made in his boots.

IIRC Atherton called time once with Hick on 98*. Think it was an Ashes tour. Maybe 97?
it was 95, and it was the most ridiculous decision possible. hick who was scoring relatively quickly in the 90s, played out 3 dot balls and then atherton called for the declaration. apparently atherton couldnt wait 1 over to let hick get his first 100 against australia, and it says a lot when you consider that hick never got an ashes century in his career and explains quite a bit as to why he lacked confidence at the international level. it was even more disheartening to see your favorite player in tears at the end of his innings.....

TEC, that is not correct.

It was a brutal decision but Hick stuffed around for an incredible amount of time and received more than one message from the dressing room in this period.

nope he scored 6 runs after the drinks break and moved from 92-98 in quick time, less than 10 balls. then he blocked 3 balls and atherton called for the declaration. the man who blocked around for an incredible amount of time was surprise surprise mike atheron with his fabulous 67 off 166 balls.

I remember it as Hick getting bogged down in the 90's and Atherton getting sick of waiting.

BTW TEC, first you said he made 95, then that he moved from 92 to 98 in quick time...both can't be true!

Back to the original topic...Are the Pakistanis being selfish letting Younis rack up the milestones here? After all, the Pak total is higher than what Aus declared on.

Pakistan haven't lost 5+ sessions to rain.

Also, they can't rely on their bowling attack to get sides out as consistently as Australia do.
