As an ODI opener : Ganguly or Anwar ... AND WHY?

yes. and he did, many times.

it was an awesome innings by saurav. but dont use it to run down another great player.
Haha that's so right . I like Ganguly and will pick him ahead of Anwar but to say that Anwar couldn't play is just silly.

subshakez and metallics......

dear friends, please watch the videos of India's SA tour in the year 2001.
Watch Ganguly's batting against the mighty SA fast bowlers, then put ur hands on ur hearts and ask ursleves "Can anwar bat in this manner?"
Yes, it was a great innings, but Anwar has batted as well many time before. Have you even seen Anwar bat? It's hard to tell by some of your comments.

Did you read what I posted? If you want to say he's a better ODI batsman, that's fine, I might not agree. I just think saying he's a better test player is a bit of stretch.

When India toured AUs in 2000,Ganguly had perfomed well against the top Aus bowling attack.
No, he didnt. He averaged 29 on that tour. He's also never scored a century against McGrath/Gillepsie, Donald/Pollock, Wasim/Waqar, or Ambrose/Walsh, despite plenty of opportunities to do so. So there's a lot of evidence behind the idea that he couldn't play pace well.

1) ganguly is the quickest to reach 9000 ODI runs,he even beat Sachin in this. anwar is nowhere even close.
Anwar played over 50 less matches than Ganguly, that's why.

2) Ganguly smashed almost double the number of 6's that anwar had hit which shows that ganguly is more agressive.
Except that Anwar still has a much better batting strikerate.

3) ganguly scored 239 and 97 in a test match. Does anwar have such a feat???
Runs scored against an ordinary attack on a flat pitch in a dull draw. How many centuries does he have against quality opposition?

record in ODIS for scoring 1000 runs in a year
i) Ganguly-4 times
ii) Sachin-2 times
So is Ganguly better than Sachin? India also tend to play more games in a year anyways...

In tests,Ganguly has scored 1000 runs in a year only ONCE.
(In the year 2007,Ganguly scored 1200 test runs only behind Jacques Kallis)

In tests, anwar has not scored 1000 runs in a year EVEN ONCE.
Again, he played more than twice the number of games than Anwar has.

I hope things are clear for all now as to who is a greater batsman.
Nope.

Why do old foggies like me start a thread comparing Indian and Pakistani players? When will they ever learn...when will they e..v..e..r......

subshakerz......

anwar totally played around 240 innings in ODIS

After Ganguly played 240 innings, his tally of runs is ahead of anwar's.
Isint this enough to prove?

PLUS,Ganguly's ODI avg is 41,anwar's is 39. Mind u,anwar played more matches as an opener.

And as i said,Ganguly has a world record in ODIS i.e he scored 1000 ODI runs in a
year 4 times. whereas anwar has scored just once.

Sachin has scored 1000 ODI runs in a year 2 times.

Ganguly even beat Sachin to score ther quickest 9000 ODI runs.

The above 2 points do not mean that Ganguly is greater than Sachin but he matched Sachin to an extent.

ShantanuDey seems like a parochial and somewhat delusional Gagnuly fan. It is pointless replying to him.

subshakerz........plz note this point. Anwar has played around 240 odd ODI innings and ended up scoring around 8800 runs. Ganguly after playing 240 odd innings had scored 9500 runs.

I hope its clear now. After the same number of innings played,Ganguly is way ahead of anwar.

And mind u,ANwar had played almost all his innins as as opener whereas Ganguly had played a few as a middle order batsman.

Of those 240 innings played by both Ganguly and Anwar, anwar had played more innings that Ganguly as an opener but still Ganguly had scored more runs after his 240 odd innings.

So I hope its clear now.

subshakerz.........I never said that Anwar is not a good batsman nor did I say that he cannotplay.

I only said that Ganguly is a much better ODI batsman than Anwar and I have proved the same.

Yes,might be that ANwar is a better test batsman.

Well that is why I have said that. His coming down the track and tonking them over long on and mid wicket looks good. But I have seen him look very foolish also.

YouTube - Shane Warne Makes Sourav Ganguly Look Foolish

(Yeah, I shouldn't have put this in. But it does look ridiculous)

His playing against Hogg seemed to be more of guess and pray. Well I might be biased against him. But, I will still maintain that he is not as good as the rest against spinners.
Haha, harsh. There's no way Ganguly could have predicted that Warnie's wrong'un would have actually turned for once! Plus, it did die on him upon pitching.....

Was there that day and it was interesting to watch Ganguly's innings change as the circumstances around him did. When Sachin was batting with him and smacking Kasper around, Ganguly looked very, very dangerous and was playing Warnie beautifully, couple of great punches through the off-side. Once Sachin was gone, he went back into his shell and then, well, you see the end result above. Fair to say he did his best batting with Sachin at the other end in general?

I see so many mad Ganguly fans like S.Dey in Kolkata. Thank god we don't have more of them on cricketweb.

pratters........I have mentioned facts and it seems to be hurting you.

Can u prove me wrong?
Why will it hurt me. I like Ganguly myself. :p

You haven't mentioned facts. You given your opinion Ganguly>Anwar and used a load of bull crap to state the same. I believe Ganguly was better than Anwar too but I won't force it down some one's throat or put Anwar down to try and prove it. There is no right answer to this question. It is subjective depending on a person's opinions. There are no facts to prove it one way or the other.
