Oh no RIP was a really entertaining cricketer. I am surprised how great his test record is why did he not play more last test also when he was just 33.
Culture change

He was a drinker

Would have potentially been an atg in 70s/80s

His biggest weakness was himself

For our younger members, here’s how things have changed

Doug Walters used to have a beer or 2 before going out to bat in a test match and a cigarette at drinks

Members of the great Windies teams smoked dope during games

Symonds turned up to a WC match straight from a nightclub but his behaviour was unacceptable by that time so he got punted

Is this documented in an interview or a book somewhere?
Well known

Journos benefit in different ways at different times

Tiger wasn’t the first golfer to play around but he did it in an era when it was more “profitable” to expose his behaviour than to party on with him

Easy to underestimate what an amazing innings that century v Pakistan in the 2003 WC was.

Not only had he been in lousy ODI form for a fair while before it but the Australian side was in tumult leading up to that match; Lehmann suspended, Warne out of the tournament, Bevan injured.

What's more against a star-studded Pakistan bowling attack Australia was in big trouble; depleted batting lineup had ost 3 wickets inside first 10 overs and looked likely to be skittles.

But all that was forgotten once Symonds came in; absolutely smoked the Pakistan batting with some glorious clean hitting. Australia and he never looked back for the rest of the tournament. Indeed Symonds played two full WC without losing a match.

As someone said earlier he made what was already an outstanding ODI side into what was arguably the greatest ever.

Yeah it was a tremendous innings. Australia could've had a totally different tournament if he didn't play it.

I remember they couldn't stop him so Waqar Younis started bowling beamers at him and was pulled out of the attack by the umpire.

So that's where they got all that pace from.

This is really sad news, it's hard not to be a fan of Roy no matter where you hail from.
A magnificent player and athlete who gave all for his country, a decent honest man who demanded respect from his team mates.
While he was a relatively quiet commentator, when he spoke it was both interesting and fun to listen to him.
RIP Roy and thoughts with his 2 young kids and wife.

Man, it's almost as if the only time I end up posting here is the untimely death of some Aussie great.:(

Symonds was maybe the key player in the greatest ODI side of all-time and perhaps the greatest power hitter since Viv.

Enjoy his 151 against Sri Lanka in 2006, posted by Robelinda just 8 hours back.

Roy was bigger than cricket because he valued living life to its fullest more; and let everyone know it.

That‘s why this tragedy is so unbelievably sad.
