Andre Nel and sledging

Personaly, i don't see what's wrong with sledging, it's not as if it shows a lack of respect or hatred towards an opponent, in fact, the fact that they are sledging you could be a sign that they are scared of you.

And i dont give a **** how much the dog wants to win, the dog better have some sense of decency.
Why? (genuine question) you're not setting up sportsmen as "role-models", are you?

You seem to set very high standards of decorum C_C, and if you were in charge of our clearly not-so-noble game we'd lose a hell of a lot of super cricketers.

HA !
Look mate - i've bowled at nets to established batsmen and lets just say I have won a game or two against some of the world top 50 tennis players 6-7 years ago in the juniors.
Dont try to get sanctimonious or condescending with me. I am precisely aware of what a sporting arena is like....i dont like advertising it or tooting my own horn, but i will mention it next time a patsy like you tries to take the 'you dont know what yer talking about' route.

And yes, you are lost. I know.
8-)
Uh, I have also experience. My cousins used to train at the Bollettieri camp. If you know about Tennis I'm sure you would know the implications. Suffice to say, in all sports [my uncles are also former-national team football(soccer) players] exists this kind of competitiveness. In an attempt to show "you can", you failed. It exists in every sport. I can see why you wouldn't get far though. :).

Whether they like it or not, they ARE role models to millions of aspiring kids.
Comes with the job.
And its their responsibility to maintain decorum on field.
And i dont mind losing super cricketers if they cant control their yaps.
Lotta superb Tennis players got into trouble for being barbaric. Refer to John McEnroe or Jeff Tarango.
I have no problems if someone like Shane Warne or Harbhajan singh are banned for half a dozen tests because they havnt learnt how to direct their frustrations.

Tennis: McEnroe, Hewitt, Coria...etc.

Football: Every bloody team.

McEnroe got chucked from quite a few tourneys.
Football, it is exceedingly rare over the years (though its creeping into european football over the last 10 years) but it is deteriorating.
But it is nowhere close to what it is in cricket.

Pardon? You seem to not watch football then. It's 100 times worse. It happens in every tackle and every ruckus. Please, argue about something else, not football.

I didnt go far because i wanted to persue academics. Its lot more fun being a geek than being world # 200 in tennis.
And i dont care what your cousin did or didnt do. If he claims that it is 'part of tennis' to verbally abuse your opposition, he is flat out lying. And you can quote me on that.
Besides, i am sure things are a bit rougher in OZland - it usually is, given the mainstream 'western-esque' culture that permeates OZ sports.
Its not just cricket where OZ sportsmen tend to get slated by other nationalities.

Err no. Football as in soccer. Not stupid versions of handball.
And no, its nothing close to what its like in cricket for most of the world.

Parents are the only role-model a child needs. You're asking perfectly fallible men, like you and I, to behave puritanically simply because they are in the limelight of new media. Do you not think that cricketers of the past took drugs? Had affairs? Were wife-beaters? Swore like troopers?

Sorry C_C, it's not all "is there honey still for tea?".

You don't know much then do you? The Bollettieri camp is in Florida, USA. No, to abuse someone is not the normal occurance. To sledge is, however. This is why I questioned your know-how because it seemed more hearsay than legitmate. Even if you are experienced, it shows lackingly. In all sporting arena's this exists. Each to their own extent, but it is in the nature of the game to be competitive. A harmless sledge never scarred anyone for life. There is a nice line between sledging and abusing. I thought you would know that, but I mean, you think there is a mental progression from sledging into getting murderously physical.

That is the football I was talking about and yes it is WORSE. You just have to watch the EPL to get a nice dose of it. If there is a rivalry between the teams it can often get physical (not tackles, but pushes and shoves and swinging arms). So, I think Cricket is safe mate.

What they do outside the field is secondary. What they do ON field is primary, because thats when millions of eyes are on them.
And yes, i expect these perfectly fallible men to display decorum.
WHen i watch the UN security council convening, i dont expect to hear explitives flying around or shoes being hurled at each other either.
If those perfectly fallible men can maintain decorum over issues that are FAR HIGHER in stakes, so can dime-a-dozen sportsmen.

Over the last 10 years, football has regressed into the same cesspool cricket is in. And no, it is NOT worse. I attended ManU and ManCity games regularly for over a year.

Well, do you watch many parliamentary discussions? They do pretty much all that, and often do curse. Uh, the opposing parties are very heavily critical of the other side. Most times questioning competance on a childish level. Even politicians can be stupid. Can't tell you how many times I've seen video's of Chinese and Korean politicians in a mass brawl.

You must have been covering your eyes and ears then. Right now, even the umpires get abuse and are talked to very badly. Does such a thing happen in cricket? I think not.

I know where Bollitieri camp is. Next time you run into Xavier Malisse, a Bollitieri camp product, ask him about U-17 in Dubai. He was 16 then.
And no, to sledge the opposition is NOT tolerated in tennis.
And i know whats the line between sledging and abusing...which is why i said i have no problem with Viv-Dilley incident but i do have a problem with swearing and acting like a hooligan on the field.
Like i said - start handing out bans for half a dozen games for explitives and uncouth behaviour and see how long it 'lasts'.

Which part of 'UN security council meeting' sounded like Aussie or Chinese parliament to you ?
