The thing that has surprised me most in this exercise is just how many really good ODI openers there've been. Guptill and Graeme Smith not making it into the first 9 teams is pretty crazy considering how good they are.

Exactly what I observed too. Guess with a bunch of make shift openers succeeding in ODIs (as many as 4 of Indian great openers are makeshift), middle order stock of great ODI players is relatively depleted.
