Strauss was good against weak to average seam attacks. He was poor though against quality ones.

More to the point, how would they fit him in? Mooen isn't good enough to complement 3 seamers, so surely they'd need a top spinner?

    Strauss Retires From Cricket

The bloke whom many in the team may regard as having wrecked the closing stages of Strauss' captaincy?

The Torygraph is pretty much saying that Strauss will step down as captain tomorrow, with Cook taking over. There's no clarity yet on Strauss' future as a test opener though.

I would slightly rephrase that, with "a rut" replacing "bad form".

That might explain that innings, but it doesn't really extend to the others. Having said that, match situations in this series have been pretty **** for him, which clearly doesn't help if you're struggling a bit with your game.

So he opted out of playing on the offside & got out when he did - how else do you define "out of form"?

**Official** South Africa in England 2012

A classic example of how meaningless an average can be. He didn't convert & didn't make a contribution which ultimately had any real significance - in fact the only thing he did which did count was seeing off the Saffers at the fag end of the 2nd test.
