I see Woakes now has 3-26 off 16 overs.....

From what little I've seen of Taylor, he works a lot of balls to leg. I accept that's not necessarily a problem, but is he good enough to get away with it against this attack?

That's the key though. We're not talking about a strike bowler, merely a support bowler who can lessen the load on the other 4 & stand up with the bat - 6 hundreds, 7 fifties & 2052 runs @ 38.72 since the start of the 2009 season is bloody good in a batting order which hasn't really shone.

How often have you watched him in 1st class cricket?

Where Woakes stands as a specialist bowler is debatable, though his domestic record is already bloody good. What cannot be argued is his ability with the bat - he's easily the best option available to Flower.

Finn would replace Bresnan, with Woakes effectively coming in for Bopara.

Woakes came in at eight actually & could bat higher - he's also one of their main bowlers. He has 6 tons in 1st class cricket now, probably more than many specialist batsmen manage by his age. If Flower has any balls, he could bring Finn & Woakes into the test team.

He can like it or lump it frankly. It looks like he's already becoming a disruptive influence - will he even accept a central contract this autumn?

Not exactly any old home series though & his batting is as much a problem as anyone else's.

Indeed - with Swann's elbow possibly b*ggered, the tail is England's only real edge. Any decent odds yet on Strauss being out of a job by the end of the summer?

The only question now is whether England will end the series at 2 or 3 ().

    Kevin Pietersen vs Michael Hussey

What stands out about Pietersen in recent years (2009 - present) is how miserably he's failed against the strongest attacks, ie. South Africa & Pakistan. He's been mediocre against the former & dire against the latter.

Headingley is classic "look up, not down" territory - what's the forecast at this stage? I'd drop Bopara unless he plays a central role today in a famous rearguard (he deserves it for that 2nd morning dismissal).

They should declare just before tea - enough time for Morkel to take out his favourite bunny.

You're not seriously suggesting that England aren't in a big hole now?

**Official** South Africa in England 2012

Looks like I was spot on! England up the proverbial creek without a paddle - lots of batting to come, but no Brigadier Block. Instead the flake from Essex is on a pair, as indeed is Strauss, who's basically Morkel's bunny (92-7 over the course of 13 innings). Funnily enough Vaughan was Steyn's...

    Pretty desperate that.

The new ball is 15 overs away. The last 15 overs have yielded 77 runs - they certainly can't afford more of that rubbish!

Well done Smith! Leading the way with a real captain's knock, unlike his opposite number - England could be heading into a real hole here.

Come onto & off the bat quicker?
