    30 Test hundreds

What's his past record got to do with it?

    30 Test hundreds

So the guy scores heavily, even more so higher up the order (precisely because he had the opportunity to spend longer at the crease) & that's the best you can do?

    30 Test hundreds

So that stat is just a complete coincidence?

    Ajmal vs Swann

Quite a lot actually & he's been pretty ordinary over the last 12 months - his (test) record since the Pakistan series is comparable to Harbhajan's ()
  5. A

    30 Test hundreds

No - he's actually done rather better in that time at three (504 runs @ 100.8 against Australia & India) than lower down the order. That suggests to me that his success in recent years has little to do with batting position & more to do with being genuinely comfortable/confident in test cricket.

    30 Test hundreds

In significantly more innings (40), at a significantly lower average (62.58) & with some conspicuous failures (he was rubbish throughout the summer of 2010). He also had far more opportunity to cash in in Australia, where Bell was basically shafted by Flower. Sorry, but it's been Bell by some...

    30 Test hundreds

 Bell since the 2009 Ashes decider: 30 innings 8 hundreds 8 fifties 1959 runs @ 78.36 That includes at least 1 ton in every full series he's played & multiple significant contributions against each team he's faced. Sorry, but Cook doesn't come anywhere near that.

    30 Test hundreds

So the team's most consistent batsman of recent years, the most likely to reach 50 & then 100, should be "ruled out"? Yep, that's very smart.

    30 Test hundreds

I didn't say anything about a "big hundred scored quickly". With Bell as low as five, you're basically ruling out the possibility of a genuinely big score - that's stupid, particularly when Pietersen can score quickly enough when he gets going to still go big from that position.

    *Official* England in India

I can't see Sri Lanka's batsmen being evenly remotely concerned about England's bowlers on home soil, though their bowlers will also struggle. Factor in the length of the series & you're realistically looking at a draw.

    *Official* England in India

You're not seriously suggesting that England will win in Sri Lanka?
  12. A

    *Official* England in India

One series against a shambolic Australian side? That hardly proves anything - England are strong at home, but a decidedly mixed bag away. When did they last win a series anywhere in the subcontinent except Bangladesh?

    *Official* England in India

So Cook wins the toss again & opts to bowl. No Pietersen (thumb), but Kieswetter will still open.....
  14. A

    30 Test hundreds

They do have a problem - the guy who is arguably now their best batsman is coming in too low down the order. And the touring schedule this winter has the potential to bring it to a head - I can't see many juicy wickets in the UAE or Sri Lanka.

    30 Test hundreds

But only 2 of those hundreds came down the order & they were both small ones. In fact only 1 of his 12 tons down the order has been a big one & that was a bit freakish, built on a very large stand with Pietersen. That's my point - he isn't "destructive" enough to consistently build big ones at...

    30 Test hundreds

I don't buy your remark about balance - Bell simply doesn't score quickly enough to bat big at five, but Pietersen does.
  17. A

    30 Test hundreds

His "big shot" was years ago now - he's been comfortably England's best middle order batsman since his return to the side.
  18. A

    30 Test hundreds

Indeed, which is one of the reasons why he should be pushing aggressively for a permanent berth at either three or four.

    *Official* England in India

Any thoughts on the consequences of this series for England? Have Cook's captaincy credentials been damaged? Is Bopara heading for the exit?

    Mohammad Yousuf vs V.V.S Laxman

Does anyone have a link to that cricinfo article? I remember reading it at the time, but can't find it now. Going back to the original question, I really don't get the "cult of Laxman". He's had some wonderful moments in test cricket, but surely not enough to be taken seriously at the highest...
