Massive Swann-shaped hole in the line-up.

Moeen isn't and never will be a front-line Test spinner, and I would be surprised were he to make it as a Test batsman, let alone at 3. After 9 years in the first class game he averages 37 with bat and 40 with ball.

Carberry and Compton are decent players but not much more than that, and they are no spring chickens. I don't generally think there's much sense in playing young players for the sake of it, but if ever there was a time for rebuilding for the future, now is it. Robson has to play as he promises a good deal more. Ballance is an outstanding prospect and I would want him in the team.

I'd be happy with something along these lines:

Cook
Robson
Root
Bell
Ballance
Stokes
Prior
Jordan
Broad
Anderson
Panesar (for want of anyone better).

You're possibly quite right about Moeen, but in the end the stats are misleading here, he's been one of the best spinners in the country for the last two seasons, hugely improved.

It would be good to see England posting a first innings score of over 400 this summer and for that reason Moen should probably play along with Monty of course. They may even bowl well together in the last innings.

@ grecian: Good to hear. I admit I've gone basically by averages, and I'm happy to stand corrected. I'd be delighted if he could prove himself with the ball, as he can clearly contribute with the bat even though it's questionable whether he has the credentials to bat in the top order in Tests.

So let's bring him in at 6 instead of Panesar. With Stokes - Jordan - Broad at 8-9-10 that is a very long batting order.

Well, I guess the thought of Moeen at 3 is because he bats there for his county, and it stops Bell playing there, when he clearly hates that, and as our best middle-order bat he really should bat where he wants Yet he may well be too loose for the position, but it's a beautiful unbound fluid looseness.

A long batting-order would indeed be nice.

I could see them complimenting each other quite well, but it really needs to be the right type of pitch for that too happen.

Obviously the reason, Moeen is rated as a spinner is he's developed an evil doosra, so I need to see it more before I judge too much, it maybe rubbish or a filthy chuck, the only two types of Doosra I've ever seen TBH.

Bell has made it clear for ages that he wants to bat at 3. Now that Trott is going to take an indefinite break maybe he can get that spot.

I could go with that lineup, but FMD........if you had posted that 12 months ago mate we'd have sent you off to the funny farm. Only 6 survivors from the Indian tour.

Scary aint it.

Think Prior has to play simply because we lack experience in the top 7. Just have to hope he finds his old form again.

Yeah I agree. From our successful team there are 2 players that are simply irreplaceable for mine..........Prior and Swann.

We'll have to make do with whatever tweaker is doing the best in county, but we don't need to be scratching around for a keeper/batsmen too. Every England fan should be praying that Prior finds his mojo.

He'd be my next one in, plays if Root has no form after injury etc...

Certainly in the mix and may be in the side anyway. All depends who gets the coach job and their preferences.

What happened to Taylor? Wasn't he the next best English hope?
IMO, I think his non-inclusion comes down to people not liking the look of him. Think he deserves another chance though, 2 games is hardly enough to write a career off.

The way I'm thinking right now about the England side is this -

1. Cook (c)
2. Robson
3. Bell
4. Root
5. Morgan / Ballance
6. Ali
7. Prior
8. Stokes
9. Jordan
10. Broad
11. Anderson

Sam Robson currently can't stop scoring tons and hopefully this will continue. For me he has jumped ahead of any of the alternatives such as Carberry, Compton, Chopra, even pushing Root back up there. Bell has to move up to number three, he has is our best batsman and a player now capable of scoring runs in any conditions against any kind of attack and I believe he will relish the opportunity to fill the spot he has wanted to bat at for some time.

At number five it could be a straight form-shootout between Morgan and Ballance, but others may throw their name into the hat should these two not take the CC by storm in the early games. I haven't really seen enough of Ballance to hold a strong enough view on his game but I do hope Morgan can score heavily in the CC, he is the kind of positive batsman we need in the top five/six, to push Test matches along, and hopefully he has resolved he issues just outside his off stump in the longer form of the game, or at least made it less of a weakness.

Not having a specialist spinner in any side is always a bit of a worry for me, but I don't see any really viable options right now. There is Borthwick, we could go back to Panesar, but is the former up to bowling at SL and India on tracks that may not assist greatly. As for Monty, there is a part of me that thinks he can come in and do a job, I'm sure if the pitch doesn't suit he will be able to do a containing job but has his recent antics seen his card marked and in this new-look England side do they want to draw a line under his England career and move on. I think in this side with four quick bowling options we can afford a less effective spinner in Moeen Ali, alongside the back-up of Joe Root while also strengthening the batting. I can't see Ali being a matchwinner but reckon he could do a job in the spinners role with no specialist beating the door down.

If Prior continues on his run scoring form of his opening CC game then he has to come back in for me. There is the romantic side of me that would love to see a James Foster get a go, especially as we have enough batting in the side to allow him to come in at eight, and watch a genuine top class gloveman at work, but I can't see that happening and Prior on form is as good as anything in world cricket as keeper-batsman.

The only contentious one I suppose in the bowling attack is the selection of Chris Jordan ahead of Bresnan, Finn, etc. I was encouraged to read how well he bowled against Warwickshire, with consistent pace and menace, and that extra nip gives him the nod ahead of Bresnan who has failed to recapture the form of a couple of years ago. He now bowls a pretty pedestrian pace in the longer forms and as a consequence his effectiveness has been minimised. It's nice to see Finn taking wickets, he has been expensive in the CC which doesn't concern me greatly providing he is bowling with hostility and a genuine wicket-taking threat. But I think he has more to do yet, if he takes a bucketload of wickets in the next few games this decision does become a tougher one.

fwiw both Taylor's dismissals in the last county game were lbw where he fell over massively and at the point of impact his head was way outside the offstump(watch the ecb highlights). That's always been one of the main concerns before.

I kinda dismissed Robson's runs in australia for the performance squad because he had past experience of the conditions and the opposition were very poor. But it's hard to dismiss his runs since. Him and Taylor were the two standout bats on the lions tour to Sri Lanka. Robson has scored a lot of runs in all different conditions. He seems to have added more quality to his game and scores slightly quicker than he did and most importantly he's in the form of his life. England need to strike whilst he's hot and get him in now imo.

Taylor regardless of his technical difficulties continues to scores lots of runs and will be unfortunate if he misses out again in this period of upheavel.

Stokes batting at 8 seems weird after he was the only bloke to ton up in Australia. Needs to bat 6 - anywhere else and he'll struggle with defining what his actual role is, IMO.
