I'm sure the axed players get paid. The rules state that all that a player has to do to get paid is to make himself available for the matches in question. The teams save on boarding and travelling expenses by sending the excess baggage home.
And these players can still come into the squad later on in the tournament, if needed.

That's an absolutely terrible thing to do. They're treating local domestic players like use-and-throw material or stunt extras, which I really find disturbing. While I've seen this happen with teams from the South and East, the fact that it's happening here, in a team where Shane Warne treats all his players equally, and well, is quite disturbing. Let's just hope the BCCI steps in to stop this- they are, after all, the Indian Cricket Board, and these are Indian cricketers affected. Let's just hope Shane Warne steps in to stop this- he takes good care of his players, even the Indians. Let's just hope this isn't even true- CricketNext.com is one site I never trust.
Playing the race card? Hmmm.

Anyway, picked my Fantasy team:

Ryder
Jayasuriya
Smith
Hayden
Gibbs
Karthik
Symonds
Styris
Henderson
McGrath
Mishra

This is interesting.

How does it save money to pay a guy $650 000 not to play?

Surely if cost saving was the aim then a lesser player would be dropped and greater value is from keeping Kaif.

Cant see how this makes sense on any level if he still get paid.

If you take the $650000 as already paid, if he's not going to play then there's no point paying for hotels, food, travel etc on top of that if he's not going to start even one match.

There is no way a team writes that money off. Someone else has to go home. Send a backup back.

This is terrible business from supposedly the smartest team in the IPL.

Well it does seem surprising that Kaif isn't in their top 20 players. I can't actually find the squad list though to look at who they might have dropped instead.

If he's not in the top 20 players then the bad business was paying so much for him in the first place. Then again, I thought all the IPL squads were far too big in the first place.

This is the squad as far as I can figure it:

Overseas:
Smith
Carseldine
Quiney
Mascarenhas
Henderson
Warne
M Morkel

Indian:
Y Pathan
Jadeja
Asnodkar
Niraj Patel
wk #1
wk#2
Trivedi
Kamran Khan
Atul Sharma

Makes 16... don't know whether you'd add Watson and Tait in there, so I'm missing two or four. But all those there ahead of Kaif is probably fair enough, given you need to balance batting and bowling.

^ where did you get that list from?

This is no way official but I just read this "If a player plays NO games or less than a quarter they will still be paid the minimum payment, which is 25% of their contracted amount."

If that is the case then paying $162 500 for 0 games may make more sense than paying an average player $650 000 for the event.

I didn't get the list from anywhere, I made it up.

I didn't realise that was true. If that's the case, the fringe international players are earning way less than I previously thought.

Oh, absolutely. Huge swathes of the money being mentioned will never get paid.

I think Owais Shah is even more daft then, giving his competitors the chance to get the jump on him like this, given it's very unlikely he'll play 25% of matches.

Warne has just made sure that the Atul Sharma thread on Cw.net will be alive till the IPL is over.

King Pietersen

International Captain
The other Royals players that have been sent home are:

Dinesh Salunkhe, Paras Dogra, Anup Revandkar, Srideep Mangela, Ashraf Makda and Azhar Malik.

So Atul Sharma keeps his place in the squad, maybe we could see him play at least 1 game after all!
