Tino Best's international career ends at 26

West Indies has the poorest economy of all the test playing nations, so it wouldn't surprise me that almost all fringe players pissed off at not getting national honors will go to the ICL. The ICL will also target young players in the Windies, thus perhaps spelling the true end of cricket in the West Indies, if something is not done.

I am not sure what could be done realistically.

I wouldn't be surprised if a quite a few fringe players sign for ICL, as IPL is mainly targeting big name Internationals. Personally though I expect if the ICL expands to FC and 50-over cricket. Then I reckon many players will just do what Kolpax players from South Africa have done. Perform well in these comps and then quit, if they get a International recall. Basically just uses these competitions as shop windows.

The problem is that once a player plays for the ICL, then their boards will not consider them for selection again, due to pressure from the ICC. I think the ICC should somehow get on a working relationship with the ICL, otherwise the 'stars' and much more importantly the upcoming players will be gone, and countries like NZ and the Windies will be most effective, and the gap between teams like Australia and the West Indies will get even bigger, if anyone thought this was possible.

Good record at domestic level didn't translate to Test cricket - he may have been picked too soon. I'll always remember him for "mind the windows, Tino." :)

What's Tino going to do now - go into the window repair business?

Edit - Damn!!!

Beaten by 2 minutes.

I think that the BCCI and ICC should allow teams to pick players who have signed for the ICL, played in it and subsequently left. People should be entitled to try out another competition to develop their own game.

Are the ICC now subservient to the BCCI?

What the hell am I saying? They have been for the last 10 years.

It's probably rather sad a defining moment of a player's career is a sledge from an opponent, but I'm in agreement with Stumpski & LE here; Tino will be best remembered for Fred's bon mot.

Kolpak contract somewhere possibly too? I assume Barbados has a trade agreement with the EU as Pedro Collins has signed for Surrey on Kolpak terms for the coming summer.

It's depressing really, when you realise that you can't even rely on your employers to pay you enough to feed your family. Although he didn't really convince at international level (he was too erratic and he was a bit too histronic-prone, from memory), I still wish him the best of luck and sincerely hope that he receives enough from the ICL to live his life to an acceptable standard (although he shouldn't have to, obviously)

Hmm... probably not amongst the batsmen (who number pretty much everyone who's faced him really) that received Beamers from him. 8-)

Best no loss in himself, utterly mediocre bowler, but the worry is if someone good is lost, as mentioned several times now.

He was indeed a happy chappie, and could grin with the best of them.

From 2002, nothing could possibly go downhill. Best was always a psychopath, and to give him a cricket ball was almost always going to result in a Beamer sooner rather than later.

Well Best surely was a character with all his on-field antics, but he didn't had a realistic chance of making an international comeback, so it was obviously on the cards that he would be lured by ****ing league like the ICL (because nobody would be interested in him in the IPL), its just the beginning, with the kind of money these players are bound to be offered by these leagues more and more players are going to choose these leagues over international cricket, which indeed is worrying sign.

Now he could turn out to be more dangerous without the ball in his hands, if he decides to sit idle at home he could turn himself into the next "jigsaw killer"!
