Worst tactical decision ever

slippy

School Boy/Girl Cricketer
I have to say the worst tactical decision ever i have seen is in the 2005 ashes, 5th test day 2, Australia where 109-0 and they went off for bad light when they knew bad weather was forcasted for day 4 and 5, they should have batted on for another 2 hours on day 2.
What do you guys think.

Ponting bowling the part timers to Dhoni and the tail during a test in India instead of finishing them off.

This was easily the worst captaincy I've ever seen. I was in support of Ponting being removed from the job for this alone. I honestly wondered if he was in league with some bookmakers when this happened.

Not strictly a tactical error, but no specialist spinner for The Oval test in The Ashes was one of the larger selectorial clangers dropped of late.

Bowling Hauritz and North in tandem at Jimmeh and Monty in the last overs their epic last wicket stand was a mistake, IMHO. Ponting obviously trying to get more overs in, but I reckon six balls of Hilfenhaus would've trumped 12 of North at that stage.

Making Pietersen captain, what were they thinking. The most selfish player to don whites and they make him captain, how did they think it would end up.

Pietersen's record as captain

Tests: 1-0-1
ODIs: 4-0-1

(Don't think he skippered any official T20is, obviously we lost the Stanford farce)

Yep, what a clanger.

KP was captain for the ODIs whitewash in India.
Haha, how the **** did I forget that

Still a decent record

Will re-post his record here (rather than editing as I consider that to be cheating)

Tests: 1-0-1
ODIs: 4-0-6

Not great, but bear in mind the 4 all came against the team that was ranked #1.

Still maintain it wasn't a clanger.

Hate to be a pedant (he said, trying to keep a straightface:ph34r:), but wasn't KP skip in both tests in India? Record should be 1-1-1.

England dropping David Gower for the 1990 tour to the Windies and the 1992/3 tour to India. In 1990 they made out that he was too old, which was particularly odd given the out-of-nowhere recalls handed to those thrusting youngsters Wayne "Grandpa Ned" Larkins and David "Debuted with Hobbs" Smith.

Nasser @ Brisbane.

With all due respect to posters, those who mentioned Ponting @ Nagpur 08 head bore & are totally overlooking the FACT that Ponting was forced to bowl those part-timers.

Plus anyone who includes Ponting @ Edgbaston is wrong IMO.

Anyway some of the worst tactical decisions/selections i've seen in my time of watching cricket would be: (this may be limited to just AUS & ENG)

- Most ENG ODI selection (too much to name over the 13 years)
- Hussain @ Brisbane 02
- Pattinsons selection @ Edgbaston 08
- MacGill not touring IND 04 or playing in Ashes 05
- Ponting general captaincy in Ashes 05 (especially his field settings)
- Thorpe being dropped before Ashes 05 (didn't turn out bad, but it was still bad)
- Hodge being dropped after SA 05/06
- Martyn being dropped after Ashes 05
- White being selected as a MAIN spinner for IND 08
- ENG not playing Dominc Cork in the 2001 Ashes
- AUS picking Mueler & McDonald

No others come to mind ATM..
