Waqar quits as bowling coach

Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis has stepped down from his bowling coaching role ahead of his side’s tour of South Africa starting later this week.

The former Pakistan captain cited the fact that he had only been appointed as bowling coach of the Test side and not the one-day team as the reason for his resignation.

“I have been told that I will only be with the team for the test series and will return home before the one-day series,” he said

“I think it is better for everyone that I should step down from this responsibility at this stage.”

Waqar was due to finish his term before the World Cup started and his decision comes just days after the PCB announced the inclusion of Mushtaq Ahmed as an assistant coach. Waqar felt that with Mushtaq being a bowler as well, there was no need for him in a coaching role.

“I am very disappointed, and I think the PCB should learn to respect senior cricketers,”

“I thought it would be better for me and the whole team if I quit, after all, dignity and respect mean a lot.”
