Katich dumped for Symonds

Simon Katich has been dropped from the 12-man lineup named for the second test against the West Indies starting next week in Hobart, following a disappointing return in his past three test innings where he has only scored two runs.

Katich has been replaced by Queenslander Andy Symonds, while Brad Hodge retains his place in the squad.

It is Symonds first call up to the test squad since making his test debut in the two test series against Sri Lanka in March of last year, where he had a disappointing series in scoring 53 runs with the bat across four innings, and only taking one wicket at a cost of 85 runs.

With the injury to Shane Watson, the Australian selectors see Symonds as the perfect replacement, with his improved bowling performances over the past year and his recent Pura Cup form where he scored 163 off only 183 balls against South Australia last week.

The full squad is as follows:

Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke, Brad Hodge, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee, Shane Warne, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath, Stuart MacGill.
