Appeal to the third umpire

An International Cricket Council committee consisting of six former international captains are to discuss allowing players to appeal against an umpires decision.

In a news release on the proposal, the ICC said the players would be allowed a certain number of appeals, if they feel a decision made by an on-field umpire could be incorrect. The decision would then go to the third umpire who would utilise television replays in making the ‘correct’ decision.

If the committee supports the proposal, it will then go to the ICC Board in July, who will accept or decline the recommendation.

If it is approved, it will then be tried out at the ICC Champions Trophy in October, and if it proves successful, again at the World Cup next year in the Caribbean.
