Twenty20 not Ponting's game

Nailed it, and Jason Gillespie saying its not a format for the bowlers well maybe for over the hill cricketers such as yourself but just look at players such as Tyron Henderson and there ridiculously good performances with the ball in 20/20. If he use your brain or have one, you will take wickets. Andrew Flintoff played a 20/20 last year and sent down four overs 4 for 3, hardly figures which suggest its solely a batsman’s game.
But there is a point that the shorter these games get, the worse it is for a lot of types of cricketing skills. I love watching guys like Dravid bat, and people already call him too slow in ODI, let alone Twenty20. And what about bowlers who love flighting the ball, and don't mind going for runs to set up the batsman?

Then there is the additional factor of having 'too many types' of games, each with its own records, rules, etc. IMO two types is enough, and if Twenty20 is to be used, it should be the with the view of eventually replacing ODI.

As for India, ODI is the format that brings in hundreds of millions and full houses every game. Why would they switch to a shorter format which would generate less money (shorter game)?

I don't get how people find Twenty20 fun, or entertaining. I was bored as hell when I watched Sri Lanka and NZ go at it in two matches. When it was just one match in a series, I was like, eh okay w.e it's good. But when I saw two matches in one series, it was seriously so boring that I turned off the TV. Can't stand it anymore

Think ODI, except no crap middle over boredom. All the bad qualities of Test cricket, with none of the good ones.

[In Borat voice]: Very nice.

Probably something to do with the fact that support for traditional cricket (tests and ODIs) has gone from strength to strength in those two markets anyway, so there's not been any need for a bastardised version of the sport...

I think the comment about it being like the Rugby 7s is spot on. I think a 20/20 World Cup is a dire idea, and hope that good players don't waste too much time on it. Why not roll a quadrennial 20/20 tournament into the Commonwealth Games if the ICC feels it must have one?
I would point out that ODIs are the bastardised version, lying somewhere in between the dynamic agression of 20/20 and test cricket and not doing either particularly well.

People my not like 20/20 cricket (as is their right) but it is an exceeding pure game with no pretentions.

I for 1 cant wait for the 20/20 WC.

What is this rubbish about the middle overs of ODIs being boring? I honestly don't get it. I feel like I'm on crazy pills or something.

Well, its just me personally. Makes me want to turn off the TV, a lot of the times. People just settle down and it doesn't have the excitement when teams try to fight it out in Test cricket. The scoring is down, and its just scripted boredom, almost.

Neil McKenzie transformed his batting when he began playing 20/20. He wasn’t a particularly quick run scorer but he learned new shots and new skills which he now uses in franchise cricket, so it has helped him immensely and its no surprise that his name is now talked about in South African test sides due to the change in his game, which occurred through playing 20/20. As for the spinners, 20/20 in England is pretty much a spinners game. Flight is not really what it is about but you can work over your batsman with changes of pace and use of the crease, Nayan Doshi is a fantastic example and sometimes considering the mood he does give the ball some air.

Interesting, looking forward to watching more of it. I've only watched about three or four so far, and like them already.;

Guess we simply have a different opinion of it.

My problem with 20/20 is that because the element of risk is so drastically reduced for batsmen (by field restrictions and the shorter innings), seeing people achieve the reward for pulling off big shots etc isn't as exciting. Its basically inflationary sensationalism and its going to produce a generation of fans who have no patience for any of the subtleties that make cricket the most fascinating sport in the world.

Me too though I’m hoping the countries will pick 20/20 specialists above current test players. Could just see are side for South Africa having a batting order featuring the likes of Cook, Bell and Collingwood whilst the likes of Mal Loye are not even considered. You can expect nations such as South Africa and Pakistan to have proper and correct sides for 20/20.

Bit harsh to expect England to surrender Cook, Bell AND Collingwood in exchange for Pietersen, isn't it? ;)

I'd like you to point me to a 20/20 that involved the bowlers doing something like this:

http://www1.cricinfo.com/link_to_da...DS/POOL-A/AUS_ENG_WC2003_ODI37_02MAR2003.html

With momentum shifts, going one way then the other. That's what 20/20 lacks, how many momentum shifts are there in the game? England were cruising, and then Bichel comes in and completely dominates them. Then you have Australia's innings where Caddick ripped through their top order, but Bevan and Bichel came to the party late. See-saw battle, show me them. I'm really curious to see how many occur. And this ODI was just one example I picked of many.

Or is this a case of, its our English game, its good and you have to accept it.

Yep, Jono has it. Far from being the weakness of ODI cricket, the middle overs are what makes the contest. The fact is that any team with some big hitters can make runs in the slog overs with nothing to lose. ODIs retain the contest between bat and ball (despite being weighted in favour of batsmen) because batsmen are forced to preserve their wicket with a mind to making more runs in the long term. The slog overs, if and when they come, are effectively a reward for intelligent batting earlier in the innings. Wickets are largely meaningless in 20/20 games unless they come at an absurdly rapid rate, thus momentum shifts and the need for thoughtful batting go out the window. It's like going into the last 10 overs of a match at 2/200, but having none of the period leading up to it.

To put it simply, a format where Andrew Symonds is a more effective bowler than Brett Lee and Shahid Afridi is a more effective batsman than Rahul Dravid does nothing for me. When it's better to go for 4 runs off an over than it is to go for 10 and take a wicket, it hardly qualifies as cricket IMO.

I feel this is a good opportunity to use the multi-quote function, cbf though, agree with everything Matt79, Faaip and Jono are saying.

Lol I love that.

Just watching Aiden Blizzard's knock the other night, the first couple of huge 6s he hit were decent, but when he lost the ball 4 or 5 times in the match it was obvious that young fans who are brought up on this are going to struggle to appreciate the subtlety of a Donald/Athertonesque battle in test cricket.

Well, they can sit there and admire how big Blizz's forearms are then.

Ponting has really took it the wrong way. Twenty20 is not just 'a bit of fun', its still competetive and a good piece of entertainment. Learn Ricky. Learn
