The Art of Appealling

Slats4ever

Some may say that this belongs in the South Africa - Australia thread. However so much criticism has been aimed at the Aussie side and their on field appealing behavious in past series. I felt it important to heighten the importance of the following article by giving it it's own thread.

So here it is....

Both a match referee and an opposition captain showing an alternate view to those portrayed by members of this forum... who woulda thought?

The law is clear - showing dissent to decisions isnt acceptable.

When some one appeals it is asking the umpire the question - 'howzatt'.. is it out?

If the umpire says no, the bowler may enquire the umpire, ask politely why. Till then its okay according to me.

Frowning at the umpire, arguing on is plain showing dissent to the decision and hence unacceptable to me.

Also the constant appealing once the decision is given not in favour of a team is plain unnecessary.

The repeated appealings when it is clearly not out is not as big a problem as the two I mentioned above - though it is a problem as well - 'excessive appealing.' It is a way to build presssure and test inefficent umpires in modern gamesmanship. It hardly works against the better umpires.

Was listening to the radio yesterday to Australia and South Africa game and they said that people just pick on Australia because they are the world champions and they probably have more appeals than anybody else and they also get more wickets does anyone agree with that or disagree with that.

When Rauf was telling Warne that Prince was not out when padding up to him because the ball hit him outside the line of off stump, to an extent I think Warne had a right to express his disappointment.

Oh dear.

Anyway Australia showed throughout The Ashes that they like to harass the umpires, with Warne doing his double appeals with the second appeal coming after the umpire says not out. I wouldn't be surprised if Ponting thinks that it's fine to deliberately exert undue pressure on the umpires by behaving like he does.

Whatever it takes!!!
Warne and Ponting whine too much about umpiring decisions not going their way. I only wonder what Mike Denness would have done had been the match referee.

er who the hell would have to apologise?

like in all honesty, its not like they appealed for something that was blatantly 'not out' (not pitched right, or going either way of off and leg stump).

smith the south african captain (and maybe the coach aswell, for probably fueling the idea/s) should.... shut up and apologise for being so annoying and talking so much bs about the australian team, yes warne orders ponting around with field placements... that moron:p

people are just being very picky about this aussie team, anything thats 'out of line' someone critisises it..

and also...

in all honesty, i REALLY doubt ICC credited workers (umpires) would be that 'noob' (amature-ish) to be under pressure from this...

HOWS THAT!!! (and look at ponting aswell... maybe he should apologise for for putting his hands in the air....)

Look, what we have here is obviously a pic from the Boxing Day test - it's a religious time of the season and the umpire has asked for a 'hallelujah' and Shane and Ricky were only to happy to oblige.

Don't doctor it up to look like they were appealing! :D

The reason you can't see the opposition batsman is because they are both at the striker's end forming a two man choir - Warney lead singing 'Deck My Balls With Spin and Folly', and Ricky and the choir joined in with 'tralalalala lala la la'.

So it's OK for the Aussies to talk about such matters, but not for other sides to talk about their opponents?

Looks like Ponting is really pleased to see Warney. Although it might just be a bail in his pocket.

Ponting fields at silly point or short leg - he's wearing a box.

(heh heh - silly point)
