The 90s and 00s banlisted draft thread

Yeah it's just the way it ended up, if I had of known I would be first in round 11 earlier I would have probably made a few different choices.

FTR I think it was a perfect time that everyone found out what pick they were for round 10 and 11.

Very pleased that Nufan didn't take Muttiah Muralitharan. I needed a spinner and had placed faith in securing one of Warne and Murali, so am pleased it paid off. Happy with the overall composition of my team though would've preferred a wicket keeper with more international experience than AB de Villiers, which I'd admit to being a weakness.

Somerset XI (with statistics post 1990)

John Wright (18 tests, 1662 runs @ 55.40)
Graham Gooch (45 tests, 4176 runs @ 51.55)
Martin Crowe (c) (32 tests, 2317 runs @ 45.43, 1 wicket @ 69.00)
David Gower (11 tests, 848 runs @ 53.00)
AB de Villiers (wk) (52 tests, 3558 runs @ 43.92, 2 wickets @ 49.50, 75 catches and 1 stumping)
Thilan Samaraweera (57 tests, 3938 runs @ 51.14, 14 wickets @ 48.50)
Imran Khan (9 tests, 545 runs @ 60.55, 8 wickets @ 29.62)
Kapil Dev (28 tests, 1002 runs @ 31.31, 75 wickets @ 32.24)
Waqar Younis (85 tests, 1006 runs @ 10.37, 367 wickets @ 23.29)
Muttiah Muralitharan (132 tests, 1256 runs @ 11.62, 792 wickets @ 22.71)
Bruce Reid (9 tests, 18 runs @ 2.25, 51 wickets @ 18.58)

It was inevitable, but it still hurts.

Always thought those CWers who argued teams don't need spinners were sagacious individuals tho, whatever impressions I've previously given to the contrary.

Dammit Somerset:p. I was hoping Murali would slip down to me. Now I have to cope with an all pace attack

Nice attack you have there Somerset. I knew you would pick Murali, did you expect me to still select him with the way my team was prior to round 11?

Right call not to pick him IMHO. With Saqlain, Sehwag & de Silva (and Atherton and Pietersen too at a stretch) already another spinner would've been overkill for your XI.

Glad I'm not completely insane. :) I would have loved one of the other quicks too, but I think it was just too much of a stretch having Haddin at 6, Johnson at 7 etc.

Jayasuriya and Lehmann can bowl a bit of spin :)
I'm not sure you can call it 'spin'. I thought they specialised in the flat, quick dart.

I'm not really complaining. The Windies of the 80's never needed a spinner and my attack will be just as good IMO.

I'm really happy you went the way you did as well. I think your team is stronger and it means that I cannot be forced to pick Kallis as my fourth bowler.

EDIT: I was actually counting on you picking Kallis for your team composition actually, didn't think it would be so agonising for you. Kallis fits in very well as a 5th bowling option because he tends to strengthen any batting lineup he is in as well. Even though I am biased (because it gives me assurance of better team balance) I think you made the correct decisions for your team.

Other than the fact you've picked a couple of bowlers who played the majority of their career outside the 90s or 00s, I think you have an excellent side there, with good balance. One of the top contenders IMO.

Not too bad. Waugh can bowl his offies if required - he's a comparable option to Viv in the Windies pace quartet teams. With McGrath leading them, that's a pretty handy pace attack, and Healy is a pretty good batsman to be coming in at 8!

If I could only catch a session or two of Cricket, I would definitely try and watch GingerFurball's numbers 4 to 6, some of the most elegant batsman from the past 2 decades!

I think I'll take Pollock.

Gives me a final XI of:

Mark Taylor*
Sanath Jayasuriya
Inzamam ul Haq
Mohammad Yousuf
Steve Waugh
Darren Lehmann
Richard Hadlee
Prasanna Jayawardene+
Shaun Pollock
Malcolm Marshall
Darren Gough

Good opening pair, fantastic middle order and dangerous hitters in the lower order
The pace attack is as fine as anything in history and is ably supported by three part timers.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with my team. Can compete well with anybody.

Which leaves me with Dale Steyn.

Would have loved to end the draft a position or two higher and grab either Pollock to strengthen the batting or McGrath because he's the best ever, but Steyn has been brilliant for a long time now so I am not unhappy with the results :).

1. Michael Slater
2. Marcus Trescothick
3. Herschelle Gibbs
4. Brian Lara
5. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
6. Hashan Tillakaratne
7. Mark Boucher (wk)
8. Harbhajan Singh
9. Craig McDermott
10. Dale Steyn
11. Courtney Walsh (c)

My core team is centered around 3 of the 4 West Indian greats from the 90s - Lara, Chanderpaul and Walsh. Though this time they have much better support players, with a very strong opening pair in Trescothic and Slater (who, in retrospect probably deserved the opener of the 90s instead of Boon). Herschelle Gibbs at 3 and Lara at 4 give the batting some flair in the middle order, which is balanced by the grit and determination of Chanderpaul and Tillakaratne. Boucher is one of the best keepers of the last two decades, who now holds a number of keeping world records. The bowling attack is ferocious, with McDermott and Steyn acting as spearheads for their respective sides and Walsh being an all time great in his own right. Harbhajan Singh is also one of the most accomplished spinners out there.

All in all bowlers win matches, but only if the batsmen make enough runs. I believe that I have the best pace attack out there, which is backed up by a highly accomplished spinner. My batting is strong and well balanced all the way down, though it has some vulnerability in the tail. Perhaps the weakness of this side is the captaincy, with no player able to be considered a great captain. Nevertheless I believe that this side would be competative with any real historical side.

I noticed you already had four bowlers plus Sehwag so expected you to select two batsmen, or a batsman and an allrounder, in rounds ten and eleven, otherwise the balance of your team with two specialist spinners and Mitchell Johnson at number seven would be a bit bowler heavy.

Thanks. :) I agree that my side includes more stars of the 1980s than probably any other side but I still based my selections on 1990s form for the likes of Imran, Wright, Gower, etc. I actually checked up on Javed Miandad too, but his performances post 1990 were somewhat disappointing in comparison to the bulk of his fantastic career.

Thanks, was quite worried I'd absolutely buggered my team after about round 4 of the draft.
