The 90s and 00s banlisted draft thread

And there we are, the two players not picked in the 90s and 00s were Boon and Gilchrist.

I will get up the vote when I get home.

Please give any writeups you'd like for your team in the next couple of hours, otherwise I'll just take what has been in your posts. Also, if you haven't published a batting order or captain I'll work one out for you as best as I can and you can get me to change the poll if you're unhappy.

Absolutely amazing that Gilchrist was left out!

my team once again.
1. Michael Atherton
2. Virender Sehwag
3. Stephen Fleming (c)
4. Kevin Pietersen
5. Jacques Kallis
6. Aravinda de Silva
7. Brad Haddin+
8. Mitchell Johnson
9. Chaminda Vaas
10. Saqlain Mushtaq
11. Shane Bond

* Bond to take the new ball with Chaminda Vaas.
* Johnson first change with Kallis
* Saqlain is obviously the main spinner, but potential partnership breakers and bowlers on spinning tracks include Sehwag and de Silva.
* Fleming the obvious captain, he's one of the most tactically astute captains from the past 20 years.
* RH and LH opening pair, aggressive batters in Sehwag and Pietersen blend in nicely with correct players such as Atherton and Kallis.
* A long tail with number 10 Saqlain having scored a century.
* Fleming 1st slip, Kallis 2nd slip.

Full side:

1. Matthew Hayden
2. Phil Jaques
3. Daryll Cullinan
4. Damien Martyn
5. Andrew Symonds
6. Daniel Vettori
7. MS Dhoni
8. Fanie de Villiers
9. Javagal Srinath
10. Makhaya Ntini
11. Alan Donald

- Middle order isn't flashy but has what it takes to do the job in tests. Not extravagant but dependable.

- Got Vettori to keep it economical and give rest to the pace bowlers which is the strength of my side.

- Got a keeper who is decent and can also score at a pace that he chooses in matches.

- Got Symonds in the lower middle order to get some quick runs when a situation arises.

- Got one of the best openers of recent times at the top in Hayden partnered by Jaques who is no pushover himself.

- Don't need to say much about the bowling which speaks for itself. Donald, Fanie, Srinath and Ntini in the side. Donald and Fanie will open the bowling with Srinath and Ntini bowling first change.

I like your bowling lineup.

I think Dhoni and Vettori should switch spots even if Vettori scored a 100 at 6 a couple of days ago.

My complete side:

Mark Taylor*
Sanath Jayasuriya
Inzamam ul Haq
Mohammad Yousuf
Steve Waugh
Darren Lehmann
Richard Hadlee
Shaun Pollock
Prasanna Jayawardene+
Malcolm Marshall
Darren Gough.

My teams strength is its fantastic balance. A fantastic middle order is well backed up by a solid opening pair and dangerous hitters the lower order.
The pace attack is perhaps the best out of everyone. With three genuine all time greats in Hadlee, Marshall and Pollock and exceptional support from Gough, any batting line-up is going to have trouble.
Throw in three very handy part timers in Waugh, Jayasuriya and Lehmann, the astute captaincy of Taylor, and the dependable keeping of Jayawardene and my team becomes one of the toughest to beat.

Teams will be posted in the new thread in reverse order of round 9, just to keep things as fair as possible.

Gotta love a team with a keeper at 9! Hadlee is extremely lucky to bat in front of Pollock,

If we went all time your side is one of the best, I do have some slight reservations given the limited impact your spearheads Hadlee and Marshall had in the 90s and beyond, oh and a lack of a genuine spinner.

I will take Graeme Smith.

My team:

Graeme Smith
Saeed Anwar
Simon Katich
Allan Border
Salim Malik
Robin Smith
McCullum
Merv Hughes
Anil Kumble
Ian Bishop
Curtly Ambrose
Notes:
1) Captain = AB
2) Slip catchers = G Smith, AB, gullies = Katich, Malik, R Smith
3) Imho, easily the best bowling lineup in this draft. A spinning pitch and Kumble will wreck havoc. A seaming wicket and I bet no other team will cross 250.
A batting wicket and Ambrose, Kumble and co will try to restrict the opponents to as low as possible.
4) Batting is strong enough to deal against fast bowling: R Smith, AB and Graeme Smith. I've got good quality batsmen to deal with spin: Malik, Anwar, Katich.
Good mix of lefties and righties. Aggressive batsmen down the order to take control of the game (R Smith, Malik and Mccullum) and fighters (AB, Smith and Katich) at the top of the order.
5) AB and Katich can do the spinning duties if required at all.

Weaknesses:
a) The lower order can hang around but none of them is likely to contribute a 50, let alone a 100.
b) McCullum can tend to be a bit aggressive and lose his wicket.

But, all in all a fairly balanced and strong team.

I felt it unwise to mention my teams weaknesses.

And the lower order is interchangeable. Hadlee averaged 34 in the 90's but either Pollock or Jayawardene are satisfactory replacements.

Oh and Nufan, pop into the experience draft. We need someone to replace marc71178 and I know you just missed out.

Vettori can act as the speed breaker between Symonds and Dhoni. Thats the reason I put him at that spot.

Whatever it takes!!!
Was tossing up between Hayden and Sangakkara, so Sangakkara it is.

Strauss
Vaughan*
Sangakkara
Younis
Ganguly
Flower+
Flintoff
Streak
Wasim
Fleming
MacGill.

Will post stats etc this evening when I'm on a proper computer.

Thoughts on the team? I'm pretty happy with it. The middle order is solid but stylish, the openers are decent and the attack is varied and solid, with Akram the undoubted star and X factor for the team.
Awesome team, tbh.. Extremely well balanced with a lots of "can bat" guys there..

Only just caught up with the final few selections - Gilchrist left out? Thats incredibly, and I would never have seen that coming. Some really powerful sides formed, top effort to everyone that competed in the draft.

I had a feeling Gilly would be left out, if only because people would be too afraid to wait until the final round for a keeper.

Thats a reasonable explanation, though was still slightly shocked that Sangakkara was chosen ahead of Gilchrist by Matt in particular, or even Bunny who had the option of opening with Katich rather than selecting Smith to do so.

TBH I at one point I was thinking of selecting Dilshan as my keeper and number 6 and select Pollock at 7, but I just figured I needed a genuine keeper.

I'm a little surprised no one selected Colin Miller in this draft. Handy player to have with his off spin.

But I selected Sangakkara as a specialist batsman.

I was tempted by taking Gilly and making Flower a pure batsman, but a 6-7-8 of Gilly-Flintoff-Wasim, while exciting, seemed a little lacking in stickability if required. Sangakkara, as a pure batsman, improved my batting more than adding Gilchrist and making Flower a pure batsman.

Second that. For a similar reason I picked G Smith ahead of Gilchrist.
