Suresh Raina - I am a convert

Yes I admit. I've been one of his most harshest critics in the interwebs. But how wrong I've been proven by the lad going by his performances in his first 3 test innings. Seems like he has the willingness to work hard, not take his place for granted, and most importantly, the persistence not normally associated with T20 bred youngsters these days.

Kudos to him. I think in him we have unearthed our next good batsman, and one who has the potential to last the distance.

(That said when he plays for CSK, I'll bag him for his inability to play anything above waist level :p)

I like Raina, but if Mahela holds on to that catch on Raina's 2nd ball, or Raina actually edged it after charging down the wicket on his 3rd ball, who knows what we'd think of Raina?

Great attitude in general though. Hopefully he makes it.

I have always believed in Raina and I think he can overcome the weakness againsst bouncers in tests. Hope he can do the same in faster tracks. But one think he will do is try hard.

Yeah that's the point. He'll at least give his all and attempt to improve... unlike waterboy.

Too early to say anything.Still seems to have issues with the short ball, may struggle outside the SC.But so far so good.

He almost never gets out to a short ball though, and if he manages it properly it'll be even less of a problem in test cricket. As long as it doesn't let it affect his technique or mentality it's not even the slightest problem. You can be a world-class batsman without ever playing at a bouncer.

Yep, I've made this point before. He has no idea how to score runs off bouncers, but as long as he acknowledges this it won't be a problem in Test cricket because he just needs to let it go. Probably more of a problem in OD cricket as teams will be able to tie him down by bowling short of a length tbh.

Disagree in case of T20s and to some extent in Onedayers, the pull has been his downfall many a time. Agreed that in tests it wouldn't give him much trouble as he has the option of leaving it, which is a premium in Limited overs cricket.

Yeah, he gets out to the short ball a lot in T20. IIRC the World T20 in England was where he really got his reputation for being poor against it.

Even in ODIs though, he's dismissed by a short ball far, far less than you might expect. I made a post on the subject during the Champions Trophy in SA- he was dismissed by a short ball and all of this stuff had cropped up again, "will never be an ODI-class player" and so on. But it was actually his first dismissal to a short ball in about 35 matches.

If he can replicate his start against other teams in other countries, then he'll have me.

Not right now, though.
