Steyn has retired from all cricket.

Just announced it today.

Might be good to have a thread with favourite Dale Steyn stories, bowling spells, YouTube clips etc.

He's amazing.

The truth about team success is it's the result of good boring foundations - good grassroots and domestic structures, good pitches to learn on, good coaching. Cricketers fortunes are shaped by their environment. South Africa's path to #1 was determined years prior to it actually happening.

However if one player embodied the modern South African cricketing spirit, and heralded a new era of domination a few years prior many thought mentally beyond South Africa, that player was Dale Steyn.

Bowler of his generation. Genuine ATG. The guy whose MO most resembled Lille’s imo. All out aggression, express outswing then developed into a crafty operator who could still crank it when he wanted to. Love him.

What a bowler. As Burgey says above, unquestionably the bowler of his generation and one of the greatest ever. As fast as he was - and peak Steyn was very, very quick - his movement, intelligence, variation and relentlessly competitive spirit meant that he was never reliant on speed alone.

I've seen it written before as a compliment to Steyn that he had a "19th Century" strike rate, but even that undersells him. It implies that the blokes knocking around pre-1900 habitually struck at 42 balls per wicket and that he was simply harking back to those days, when in fact even by 19th century standards Steyn's strike rate was spectacular.

still surprised the greatest bowler of our generation ended up calling psl more rewarding then ipl, was really sad to see the hate he was getting for talking about which league he preferred more. nevertheless best bowler of this generation

Whatever it takes!!!
As I mentioned somewhere else, one of the best ever and for me, in the top 5 pacers ever where any could arguably be called #1. The best fast bowler I have seen over a full career, easily.

My favourite player growing up, by far.

There was something about the anticipation of tuning in to the morning of a Test match to watch him bowl that I’ve never felt since his unfortunate fracture.

My favourite fast bowler to watch ever. Love his aggression and attitude. He will be missed.

I liked him so much I almost didn't mind South Africa beating Australia while he was leading the attack.
