No more Karu - . Broked his finger.viriya-:D

I'm sure many tears will be shed by you boys at this news.

Prasaana is in.
- viriya

 shamefor Dimuth but he shouldnt have really been in the ODI team. Personally would have liked to see Eranga come in as we already have cover for Dimuth in the mighty Chandiguns..still it is what it is..

just also read that Kusal Perera being flown in as batting cover apparently without being added to the squad. like the old school mafia tactics..perform or we break the fingers..  again would have preferred to see Vithanage come in instead of Kusal as the opening pair are performing well so no point changing that and the young lad played well here in England(i admit he had a poor tour after in UAE i think but it could have been the slowness of the wickets)

Ajantha Mendis don't turn the ball. Even I can bash up 85k military medium pacers if I am in the mood. Ajantha should never be in the team again. He was asked to be an off spinner, but disagreed and keeps bowling middle finger crap, when that finger is clearly giving away.

It's getting to the stage where not only are the right replacements not coming in but there are no longer better options to pick from, no one from our best XI has had to be sent home yet so I'm not too concerned about any of this. What does concern me is that Prasanna has replaced Dimuth in the sqaud, seems like more of a replacement for Jeevan Mendis to me but whatever.

Guessing Kusal has been flown over to replace whoever else gets injured, suspect he'll bat 6-7 and try to clear the rope a bit, no way is he gonna come in and open if Dilshan and Thirimanne are available

Prasanna and Tharanga replacing Mendis and Karunaratne definitely makes sense.. they just did it the opposite way around.

Sri Lankan selectors

But tbh I thought the Tharanga selection to replace Jeevan was motivated by the lack of batsmen in the squad, however now the imbalance has been restored

Haha yeah, the squad is now balanced in the same way as it was when it was first named, despite none of the replacements being like for like! :p

To be fair I've seen the logic every step of the way.

> The original squad was selected with Dimuth expected to open on the strength of his Test ton in NZ and Jeevan expected to bat 7 on the strength of his awesome First Class performances last season and a couple of decent/promising finishing jobs in the ODIs against England. These ideas were flawed but both were selected primarily as batsmen, expected in be in the first choice XI.

> After the series against New Zealand it became pretty obvious that Dimuth opening in ODIs wasn't going to work and Jeevan (nor Perera) was good enough with the bat in these conditions to bat seven. This fundamentally changed the balance of the squad as Dimuth was now a spare part and Jeevan had transformed from a batting allrounder to a partnership breaker who could bat a bit. The squad was now lacked batting depth, particularly lower middle order batting depth with Thirimanne having to open, Chandimal failing in that spot again and Jeevan/Thisara having nosebleeds at 7.

> When a bowling allrounder (Jeevan) was injured, the selectors took the opportunity to replace him with a batsman and address that balance issue.

> When Karunaratne was injured, they brought in a spin bowling allrounder. This seems counter-intuitive at first, but Dimuth's nothingness as a squad member was part of what caused the extra batting depth to be required in the first place, and more importantly they're now also carrying Herath injured, hoping he'll recover. Prasanna could cover Herath in the short term to ensure two spinners were still an option, and then cover Mendis's weird norounder role in the long term once Herath recovered if they wanted to go that way. If they really need the extra batsman afterall then Herath can be withdrawn later -- because he's injured.

So it's been a journey, but I get all the decisions. The only decisions I really disagreed with with the ones made in the initial squad, which are really what have caused all this. :p

Who would you guys have picked originally?

I wanted Dilshan | Lahiru | Sanga | Mahela | Chandimal | Mathews | Best Slogger Batsman | Kula | Fatty | Senanananana | Malinga

I'm guessing Tharanga would have been the best fit for #7?

I think the best no 7 for us is probably still Thisara

If anything I'd have Tharanga where you have Chandimal

If we're talking "originally" as in "before the New Zealand ODIs, when they picked the squad", I think my squad was:

1 Dilshan
2 Jayawardene
3 Sangakkara
4 Thirimanne
5 Chandimal
6 Mathews
7 Jeevan/Perera
8 Kulasekara
9 Senanyake
10 Herath
11 Malinga

12 Jeevan/Perera
13 Tharanga
14 Eranga
15 Priyanjan/Kandamby (based on India ODIs where I would've played both)

I think it became obvious by the end of the NZ ODIs that batting Jeevan or Thisara at 7 would've been ambitious though, and probably a bit pointless given how well Mathews and Dilshan were bowling in the middle overs.. so I would've played Priyanjan or Tharanga at that spot. I went with more batting than the selectors did, but I can see why they went the way they did -- they expected Jeevan or Thisara to be able to bat 7 (as I did originally), and they were worried about Malinga's fitness. The really dire thing was picking Karunaratne based on basically nothing and then having both him and Chandimal in the squad as batsmen they didn't want to pick before the tournament had even started.

my XI( & order) would be 1.dilshan 2. thirri. 3 sanga 4. chandimal 5. mahela 6. angelo 7. thisara 8. Herath 9. Sena . 10. Eranga. 11. Malinga.. I had said for a long time that we should play two spinners as i suspected that the ICC would ensure that flat wickets would be prepared as they seem to in every big tournament these days..

You can't stick Chandiguns at 4 in the form he's in, even if it is a more natural position, his time comes after the WC IMO

I reckon Lakmal has a slight edge over Eranga as an ODI bowler too tbh

Yeah but I think Lakmal completely sucks at all facets of cricket so it should be no surprise I went with Eranga there. I would've picked Prasad over Lakmal too (I realise Prasad is injured now, but the above squad is what I would've been looking at way before the NZ ODIs).

If I was picking an eleven from the squad available now, I'd go

1. Thirmanne
2. Dilshan
3. Sangakkara
4. Jayawadene
5. Mathews
6. Tharanga
7. Perera
8. Prasanna
9. Kulasakera
10. Senanayake
11. Malinga

Anti-Lakmal sentiment is loud and proud.

crikey, forgot about Lakmal ( again) apologies- guess my brain has already got the friday feeling..!! I still stick with Chandi as he has done well in the past in Aus but just hasnt really had a chance to prove himself yet recently..as for Lakmal/Eranga...not sure probably agree with you on.. Lakmal

Kula's time is done i'm afraid..time to concentrate on helping the set up of SL cricket for him as he has plenty of experience to give..

Lakmal was coming off 4/30 against eng going into that NZ series, but a poor test series tbf, **** you PEWS and other Lakmal haterz (looking at you phlegm).

Still think even an out of form Kula has something to offer this team tbh, certainly if we pick 3 seamers

i refuse to put perera at #7 but i always try hard to avoid picking norounders. sri lanka are better than that. what even is perera meant to be? he's acceptable with the bat at #8 but he needs to pull his socks up with the ball in the bowling allrounder role, but higher in the order you can give him less overs but need him to do more than troll Afghanistan with the bat.

Maximas

He's a specialist finisher with the bat, almost commands a spot with that role alone when in form, and given the top 5 is functioning so well atm I don't see why we should stack the team with more batsmen and bat him at 8 which only weakens the bowling
