Raina was not born with an Indian cap on his head. He too was uncapped before he was selected.

This was what you had said earlier.

Now it turns out that longer formats like Ranji and Duleep are irrelevant for an Indian cap, but performance in local OD tournaments are.

How about this then?

Badrinath Domestic FC average 63.37, Domestic List A average 42.34
Raina ---- Domestic FC average 46.44, Domestic List A average 37.56

{Yuvraj --- Domestic FC average 50.05, Domestic List A average @39.72)

Yuvraj is old hat, but Badri and Raina were both uncapped when Raina was preferred. Any additional insights on why that was the case? What am I missing here? I'm sure it must be something so obvious that only an idiot like me can fail to see it.
You can dig into stats and produce players with better stats than even Sachin Tendulkar. There is always a context added to the case and the career average is over the whole career while performances are also seen in that season. Kindly check in the stats for the period which was recent to the performances. Then also check what is the technique of Raina and Badrinath. Where the series was wherre were supposed to play and against whom. So there is always a context. How much bring in the stats, the fact is presently India is No 1 Test Team, they won the WC and with IPL a whole loads of players have got good exposure against quality international players.

Right, we have come a long way in this educative journey, haven't we?. Starting with proving oneself in the longer formats, performing in the Ranji and Duleep Trophy and such other nonsense. Making rapid progress towards performing well in the local OD tournaments (which are held under a thick veil of secrecy since it is only IPL which is covered in news), which too turned out to be smoke-screen. To the final destination, where context rules supreme, where we can now forget all about the earlier mumbo-jumbo about performance.

It has been thoroughly enlightening. Thank you very much.

Why Cricinfo has not covered any news of Pak & NZ players playing for SLPL. The SLPL as reported by cricinfo was supposed to have the 4 day format this July and Dec the T20 format.
With so many series around and Afridi etc also have county commitments I hope to see the news on cricinfo and finally more details about it

I most certainly do not want a separate thread.
Either for the same, or for anything that might bear even a remote resemblance to the same.

I do not want to Hijack the SLPL thread.
I'm extremely relieved. And very very grateful.

Lets discuss it over here.
Let us not discuss it - over here, over there, for that matter anywhere at all.

Top players approached for Sri Lankan T20 league

Sri Lanka Cricket is organising a Twenty20 league in July and August 2011 featuring their top players as well as internationals from India, Australia, Pakistan, West Indies and South Africa. The tournament, which will have five regional teams led by senior Sri Lankan cricketers, is the latest in a series of Twenty20 leagues, with some degree of international participation, that have been created over the past few years.

The league will be run by the Singapore-based Somerset Entertainment, which won the organisational rights and is now looking at securing a TV deal. It is understood to have approached around 35 international players including Yuvraj Singh, Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Yusuf Pathan and Shahid Afridi, and most of Sri Lanka's leading cricketers.

Salaries in the league will be on the lower side; one estimate suggested three salary slabs with the highest at $30,000, which is what a mid-level player would get for each game of the IPL.

The BCCI is understood to have given the league its blessing and the tournament's timing - it will coincide with India's Test series in England - will suit India's limited-overs specialists. An Indian player, who was one of the first to be approached by the organisers, said he was made to understand that the tournament was being held with the approval of the Indian board.

"I was made an offer during last season of Ranji Trophy," the player told ESPNcricinfo. "I did not agree at the time but they [the organisers] said it is not as popular a league as the IPL so money won't be that big. We left it by saying we can talk more as the time goes. Perhaps a new offer could come after the IPL."

While the league will be a lower-profile event compared to other Twenty20 tournaments, it is likely to benefit from the fact that many players will be free from international commitments at that time. It is also likely to draw in several players who are no longer active in international cricket. Shoaib Akhtar is one player who is understood to be a certainty for the tournament and Herschelle Gibbs is also believed to have been approached.

The league will also be a boon for players from Pakistan, who currently are not part of the IPL and whose international exposure has been limited because of security issues.

As earlier reported of having 7 teams but there would be original 5 teams. Also it was said that Shahid Afridi and Daniel Vettori were captain of some teams but that is not true. Rather players have been approached and we would see the finalization of players soon

Also the money offered is 4 slabs with the max slab of 30k $. That is what like the salaries what some domestic players make in IPL. So there is second challenge of getting foreign stars.

Having said that I feel for 15-20 days and 8 matches, a amount of 30K would suit many players from teams like Pak, BD, NZ, WI, Zim, Ken, Ire and Afg

I think every Pakistani player contacted will play the league.I think there's every chance of Afridi captaining a side, because like i said previously,he's very likely to be the most high profile foreigner in the league and since he's an international captain too,it would make complete sense for him to lead a side.

Also, there's a large chance that Shoaib Akhtar could play the league. That would be incredible :D

It has been confirmed that all 5 teams will be captained by Lankan Players. Shoaib Akhtar surely will be playing. If Pakistan do not have any international fixtures they surely will flock to the tournament. After all who will refuse 20 to 30 K for 20 days when their sources of income are limited these days. Something is better than nothing. But many players have county commitments. I do not know where they will play. Lets see how it goes

That was in initial report. Now it has been confirmed that there would be 5 teams and all would be with SL captains. The new NE Teams of Nagenahira and Uthuru are not there for this edition

Also Afridi & Vettori have not confirmed as of now. The invitations have been sent and the acceptances have to come.

Check cricinfo which has the latest report quoting sources. The initial reports were by Somerset Inc probably to gain some media hype. As of now even who all are playing havee not been confirmed

There was a initial report floated by Somerset on 7 teams. But as per the latest release which is on cricinfo there will be 5 teams and international stars have to be confirmed.

Even the people who have made the SLPL pages are not sure and just put anything that is made available to them

Sri Lanka Premier League

7 Teams, One Cup, Sanga, Mayya, Sana, Dili, Vaasi, Vettori, Afridi will Guide to Get the Cup. Inter Provincial Premier League with Well known International Stars.

Sri Lanka Cricket's domestic inter-provincial tournaments have received a big boost from a Singapore-based company, Somerset Entertainment Ventures Ltd, who have come forward to sponsor the three formats - the four-day league, limited-overs and Twenty20 for the next five years, beginning in 2011. The tournaments will come under one umbrella and have been re-branded the Sri Lanka Premier League.
General Information

Six national captains, including four from Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardane, Kumar Sangakkara and T. M. Dilshan, will lead seven Provincial teams in the forthcoming Sri Lanka T20-Premier League (SL-T20-PL) Tournament.
The seventh captain will be former Sri Lanka vice-captain, Chaminda Vaas. The Sri Lanka T20 Premier League will feature almost 35 international cricketing stars and will be the first of its kind in Sri Lanka.

The event organisrs, Somerert Entertainment Ventures (SEV) have found a window for the tournament which is sandwiched between Sri Lanka's tour of England and Australia's tour of Sri Lanka.

The event will kick off on July 15th and will go on for 18 days. Twenty four hotly contested matches, including the two semi-finals and the final, will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium. There will be two matches on certain days.
Dashing opener T. M. Dilshan will lead Basnahira while Kumar Sangakkara (Kandurata), Mahela Jayawardane (Wayamba), Sanath Jayasuriya (Ruhuna) and Chaminda Vaas (Uva) will be the other captains.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi (Nagenahira) and New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori (Uthura) have been chosen to lead two provinces that were isolated from the game for ages due to the civil war.
Five overseas players could be registered to a provincial team but only four will be allowed to play in a match. Sri Lankan national selectors and cricket authorities have agreed to blood as many youngsters and almost 70 Sri Lankan cricketers will be registered in the seven team tournament.

Almost all Pakistani national cricketers will be invited to play in the SLPL. Factually, Sri Lanka was Pakistan's adopted home in the 2011 Cricket World Cup concluded last month as they played all their first round matches in Sri Lanka.

In addition to that, Chris Gayle and the Bravo cousins (Dwayne and Darren) from West Indies, Pathan brothers (Irfan and Yousuf) from India, Herschelle Gibbs, David Warner and Shaun Tait will be seen in action on Sri Lankan soil.

The availability of retired great Muttiah Muralitharan is not yet confirmed but some unconfirmed sources revealed that he is eager to play in the series.

Milind Rege, the tournament manager of the 2011 cricket World Cup will be in charge of all cricketing matters of the tournament. Rege is a former Ranji Trophy captain for Mumbai and recently retired from TATA corporation as a managing committee member
