Shane Warne - the myth

Thanks. Didn't know of that incredible record of Murali's in county. Whichever way you cut it, Murali usually has gun figures (except tests in Australia). Even in IPL playing at the fag end of his career he had best economy rate of all bowlers in first 2 or 3 seasons before being bested by Ashwin. Haven't kept track since.
Tests in Australia are the most important measure for a spinner.

Nothing's been better to watch in my time of watching cricket than Warne weaving a spell, setting a batsman up, playing psychological games. Literally larger than life. What an absolute competitor. Watch the 2005 Ashes highlights, he looms so large out there.

More competitive spirit and heart than the entire Indian cricket team of his era.

The really big myth about him is that he's supposed to be this amazing tactical thinker, as has been conclusively disproven by his commentary career
My theory on this is it's a matter of confirmation bias. He was "funky" and did a lot of weird (read: stupid) **** when he did captain. Thus when it comes off he looks like a genius.

More competitive spirit and heart than the entire Indian cricket team of his era.
Do you have to? You know how sensitive these guys are

I was watching a TV program about him yesterday.. yeah, yeah his reputation is a bit inflated by England ****ting their pants whenever he was in sight, but damn the guy was great to watch.
This reputation against England was based mostly on the Gatting-ball and because he played them so much. I don't think he was actually statistically that much better against England than most other countries.

why?

history shows SENA spinners go to asia to die and asian spinners go to SENA to die.

well except england, which has the fairest pitches for spin bowling of the sena countries.

He averaged 24 +/- 1 run vs England, Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand. Hee averaged 20 vs Pakistan. He averaged just under 30 against the West Indies (undoubtedly heavily impacted by his 1999 tour when he really shouldn't have played). And 47 vs India. In England, NZ and Sri Lanka he averaged between 20 and 22. He averaged between 24 and 28 everywhere else except the West Indies and India.

He really did no better against England than he did against most other nations and just like most other nations, he did better overseas against them than he did at home.

Murali did better both in and against England. This is despite not cashing in against 90s England.

Was sarcasm, just making fun of all the shitty posts in this thread and the others regarding Warne/Murali etc

If anything, playing against 90s England before he was at his peak would have hurt rather than helped his average against them.

Line and Length

International Coach
To a great extent Warne was a master of bluff. He claimed to have a number of new deliveries that he could use but. in fact, he mastered just 5 - Leg-spinner,Top-spinner, Googly, Slider, Flipper. Many believe his so called Zooter was just a flipper with less bounce. Nevertheless, he was a fine bowler and the master of the 5 variations mentioned.
India was the only Test nation against whom he averaged more than 30 (an unimpressive 47.2) with the West Indies his next least impressive (29.95). When it came to performing in various countries he averaged over 30 in both India and West Indies but performed well elsewhere.

International Captain
I'll grant you the first two and last two deliveries (at least in the first half of his career), but I don't really agree that Warne was a master of the googly. His googly didn't seem well disguised, lacked venom, and didn't really spin back much. Several other leg spinners, such as Bill O'Reilly and Abdul Qadir, have truly mastered this delivery and make Warne's googly look mediocre by comparison.

Warne virtually never even bowled the "googly" (weird name for the wrong'un btw) after his shoulder surgery. Definitely can't say he mastered it when he could barely even physically bowl it.

You could say this about pretty much any spinner ever. Perhaps there are a couple of exceptions such as Murali and O'Reilly, but even that is debatable. Murali's record in India is similar to Warne's, and O'Reilly only really played against one top class side.
You know SA beat that "only top class side" twice. Home and away. O'Reilly played the bulk of his games against his 2 best opponents. What he would've achieved if he had frequent opportunities to pad his stats against hack sides.

2 hard truths: Dimitri Mascrahenas, Shaun Udal and Sean Ervine do not make up a star studded side

And Murali chucked
