South Asians are also quite casual about racism. May have to do with the fact that we did not need a revolution or civil war to eradicate racism because we had different kind of **** to deal with. E.g. not throwing widows into pyre. If westerners heard some of the jokes from stand up comedians from this part of the world, they will be stunned. This **** has a point for once. Monkey just means uncivilised in the SC. That's like someone from ancient the world mistakenly thinking someone was calling them wise instead of treacherous upon being referred to as a snake.
You haven't? They aren't even popular in Pakistan and were sent over to India? Scandal!Yeah, casual racism and colourism are common in the SC. Ethnic hatred is more of a severe problem than racism in particular because of our different history. Also, I have never heard of those people.
You haven't understood yetIt is true though. Not an excuse. He should've known better and it is insensitive. But I've been referred to as a monkey my whole life.
And Trundler, people from your nation have been referred to by its first four letters over here their whole lives without a thought from locals that it’s an offensive term (was never thought as such here going back). As you say, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t refrain. The idea Gavaskar had no idea that his choice of words in recently independent former slave colonies while talking about black people is as believable as Harby not knowing. It is true though. Not an excuse. He should've known better and it is insensitive. But I've been referred to as a monkey my whole life.
This is the troubling element tbh. It suggests that racism is culturally embedded. There could be an element of casual racism to it depending on context but that is how the term is generally used. Dgaf about Gavaskar or whatever.
Agreed with the first bit. Don't know anything about the Gavaskar case. And Trundler, people from your nation have been referred to by its first four letters over here their whole lives without a thought from locals that it’s an offensive term (was never thought as such here going back). Adopting *****’s line of thinking, folks here should just carry on calling Pakistanis P***s and not worry about it. It’s dumb arse logic. You can’t expect sensitivity towards your own mores but wilfully ignore those of others.
You know that's not what I meant though. The it in that sentence referred to its usage to denote naughtiness sans any racial connotations, which it could have. I will say that people can be insensitive about racism here due to ignorance but I'm now fairly certain I'm being baited. This is the troubling element tbh. It suggests that racism is culturally embedded.
