I love these.

Makes one appreciate what guns blokes who possibly don't trouble putative selectors of AT XIs like Tubby Taylor, Neil Harvey and Fat Gray Smith were early in their careers.

And, if one ever needed reminding, just how completely insane Bradman's batting was.

Harvey was gun for a long time wasn't he?

Sangakkara the underrated man of modern cricket. For all the plaudits Murali gets for taking 800 wickets and 6wpm he couldn't have done it without Sangakkara scoring so many runs. Yet he doesn't seem to be rated in the same class as Tendulkar/Lara or even Ponting, generally getting shuffled down to the Dravid tier, despite averaging higher than all of them.

Viv was in or around second place for a very long time as well, suggesting that his overall average under sells how good he truly was (which we all knew anyway).

Superb first half of career for Viv Richards it would seem. He also commanded #1 ranking for longer than you'd think looking at his batting average.

Had a wonderful peak but a long decline.
Here's another theory, Viv simply forgot how to bat in the West Indies ;)

In his last 3 years he played 3 series at home with 12 Tests for 450 runs @ 26.47. Either side of those 3 series he had 10 tests away with 822 runs @ 54.80

1988/89, AUS: 5T, 446 runs @ 55.75
1991, ENG: 5T, 376 runs @ 53.71 (final series)

Every great batsman you can name is closer in ability to some rando like Asad Shafiq or than to Bradman..

Sangakkara is underrated and ranked below Ponting from the partisan Australian perspective, but not across the cricket world as a whole. For instance, if we look at the recent thread on the top 5 cricketers of the last 20 years, I'm fairly sure Sangakkara was in the top 5 overall and got more votes than Ponting, particularly if you exclude Australian voters.

Sanga is a very weird one. He didn't do well against certain countries but would do well against others in similar conditions. Got a lot of friendly pitches to bat on but also excelled plenty of times overseas.

I wish he'd given up the gloves earlier than he did. I don't think it's a coincidence that he started dominating when he did that.

I just find him incredibly hard to rate.

Chanders drops 9 points after removing not outs. Anyone else come close?

Nah, Ponting definitely gets rated higher and fairly so imo. Let's shave off those extra 30 tests Ponting played and compare them. Penalising players for sticking around past their best because their team hadn't found a replacement is nonsense. It doesn't undo the fact that Ponting racked up 32 odd test tons faster than anyone else despite not feasting on minnows half as much.

Better than Dravid and Younus though I'll admit begrudgingly

Sangakkara was definitely better than Dravid and Younis but less sure on whether he was better than Ponting. Imo, he probably was simply because he seemingly kept getting better and better as a batsman. But **** me, he got to bash minnows a lot, which makes simple a vs b comparison of career averages/peak averages very difficult. His numbers are difficult to compare with the other ATGs of the era imo like Daemon said.
