Cricketer Of The Year
Below you will find the final 9 teams as selected by our resident 'experts'. The teams are given together with their Test averages and, in some cases, the selectors' comments.

Participants are asked to allocate 9 points for the team you consider the best through to 2 points for the least impressive. Your own team is not included in your voting.

Non-participants are invited to vote allocating 9 points through to 1 point.

This will be a difficult task as there are 9 impressive line-ups.

HONESTBHARANI - Honest Hunks

Jeff Stollmeyer - 2159 runs @ 42
Pieter Van Der Bijl – 460 runs @ 51, backup keeper
Joe Root – 7599 runs @ 48, 28 wickets @ 50
Aravinda De Silva (vc) – 6361 runs @ 43, 29 wickets @ 42
Shakib Al Hasan – 3862 runs @ 39, 210 wickets @ 31
Mushtaq Mohammed – 3643 runs @ 39, 79 wickets @ 29
Imran Khan © - 3807 runs @ 38, 362 wickets @ 23
Les Ames (wk) – 2434 runs @ 41, 74 catches and 23 stumpings
Jason Gillespie – 1218 runs @ 19, 259 wickets @ 26
Kemar Roach – 891 runs @ 12, 193 wickets @ 27
Bruce Reid – 113 wickets @ 25

Very happy with the side overall, choice of new ball pairing between Reid and either Imran/Roach depending on Imran’s batting workload, excellent 4 seamer attack for all conditions, bounce, swing, pace, reverse swing all available in plenty. Excellent allrounders for the spin attack in Shakib and Mushtaq, covering both wrist and finger spin with plenty of back up from Aravinda and Joe Root. Batting wise, batsmen who average 40 or there abouts till 8 and 9 and 10 are no mugs either, so will never be easy to run through this side, whatever be the attack facing them. Think its one of my better efforts in recent drafts.

JOJOXI

All figures are Test match figures apart from Clive Rice who due to Apartheid only played 3 ODIS at the back end of his career. I’ve posted his First-Class figures.

1. HANIF MOHAMMED (3915 runs @ 43.98)
2. WILFRIED RHODES (2325 runs @ 30.19) (127 wickets @ 26.96)
3. DAVID BOON (7422 runs @ 43.65)
4. SACHIN TENDULKAR (15921 runs @ 53.78)
]5. DARYLL CULLINAN (4554 runs @ 44.21)
6. CLIVE LLOYD (captain) (7515 runs @ 46.67)
7. CLIVE RICE (First-class) (26331 runs @ 40.95) (930 wickets @ 22.49)
8. ROD MARSH (keeper) (3633 runs @ 26.51)
9. ERAPALLI PRASSANA (735 runs @ 11.48) (189 wickets @ 30.38)
10. JAMES ANDERSON (1185 runs @ 9.63) (584 wickets @ 26.83)
11. COLIN CROFT (158 runs @ 10.53) (125 wickets @ 23.30)

Despite Wilfred Rhodes middling average he played 58 matches for England just under half of them as an opener. When opening Rhodes average increases to 36.73. Also 127 Test wickets makes him a good option as a second spinner to support Prasanna, a bit of variety with an offspinner and slow left-armer too. By all accounts Clive Rice was a very capable allrounder, Wisden question whether he is the best player ever to not play Test Cricket (https://www.wisden.com/stories/count...par-excellence) and with that bowling average hope he could step up to Test Cricket as a 3rd seamer. His batting ensures there is depth in the lower middle-order.

Anderson and Croft provide a nice contrast, Croft gives the bowling attack some express pace whilst Anderson can hold an end tight if conditions aren't in his favour and can carve through a batting line up if the ball is swinging.

Hanif Mohammed provides grit at the top of the order, David Boon whilst playing mostly at 3 has opened in 63 Test innings averaging just over 45 in those innings, so a solid man to come in if one of the openers get out early. Tendulkar, Cullinan and Lloyd a very competent 4,5 and 6 and a strong captain to lead this side in Clive Lloyd.

KINGKALLIS - CricZo XI

Graeme Gooch / ( 8,900 runs @ 42.6; 103 catches )
Desmond Haynes / ( 7,487 runs @ 42.3; 65 catches )
Charles Macartney / o ( 2,131 runs @ 41.78; 45 wickets @ 27.55; 17 catches )
Martin Crowe / ( 5,444 runs @ 45.36; 71 catches )
Mahela Jayawardene / © ( 11,814 runs @ 49.84; 205 catches )
John Reid / o ( 3,428 runs @ 33.28; 85 wickets @ 33.35; 43 catches & 1 stumping )
Syed Kirmani + / ( 2,759 runs @ 27.04; 160 catches & 38 stumpings )
Alan Davidson o / ( 1,328 runs @ 24.59; 186 wickets @ 20.53; 42 catches )
Khan Mohammad o ( 54 wickets @ 23.92; 4 catches )
Lance Gibbs o ( 309 wickets @ 29.09; 52 catches )
Sydney Barnes o ( 189 wickets @ 16.43; 12 catches )

Pretty decent team overall!

Very solid openers in Gooch and Haynes. Stunningly experienced middle order in Macartney, Crowe, Jayawardene and Reid. Pretty handy gloveman Kirmani will assure that job gets done.

Multi dimensional bowling attack of Davidson, Khan, Barnes and Gibbs supported by Macartney are capable of taking 20 wickets.

LINE & LENGTH

Graeme Smith (C) / 9265 runs @ 48.3
Conrad Hunte / 3245 @ 45.1
Ken Barrington /o 6806 @ 58.7; 29 wickets @ 44.8
Steve Smith (VC) / 7227 @ 62.8
Kevin Pietersen / 8181 @ 47.3
Hashan Tillakaratne (WK) / 4545 @ 42.8
Brian McMillan /o 1968 @ 39.4; 75w @ 33.8
Kapil Dev /o 5248 @ 31.1; 434w @ 29.6
Trent Boult o 267w @ 27.6
Shane Bond o 87w @ 22.1
Bert Ironmonger 74 w @ 18.0

Two of the ATG openers followed by a trio of talented batsmen all capable of making big scores. The 'keeper is a proven batsmen and he is followed by two fine all-rounders. The top 8 have all scored multiple Test centuries with a total of 126 among them.
Dev, Boult, Bond and McMillan make up a strong pace attack with Ironmonger the front line-spinner. Barrington offers spin support while the remainder of the top 5 batsmen have all taken Test wickets.
Led by Graeme Smith, the only man to have captained in 100 Tests with Steve Smith a more than useful deputy.

TEUTON

1.Sunil Gavaskar - 10122 runs @51
2. Alastair Cook - 12472 runs @45
3. Clem Hill 3412 runs @39
4. Richie Richardson - 5949 runs @44
5. AB de Villiers - 8765 runs @50
6. Brendon McCullum - 6453 runs @38, 178 wk dismissals
7. Chris Cairns - 3320 runs @33, 218 wkts @29
8. Maurice Tate - 155 wkts @26, 1198 runs @25
9. Wes Hall - 192 wkts @26
10. Graham McKenzie - 246 wkts @29
11. Muttiah Muralitharan - 800 wkts @22

Starts with an outstanding opening pair, followed by a very good middle order and depth in batting thanks to the multi-talented NZers McCullum and Cairns. Four very good quicks to cycle through while Murali weaves his magic at the other end.

TRUNDLER

Jack Hobbs 5410 runs @ 56.9
Bill Brown 1592 runs @ 46.8
Kane Williamson 6476 runs @ 51.0
Younis Khan 10099 @ 52.0
Vijay Hazare 2192 runs @ 47.6
Jack Gregory 1146 runs @ 37.0 / 85 wickets @ 31.1
Alan Knott 4389 @ 32.8 / 250 catches، 19 stumpings
Learie Constantine 58 wickets @ 30.1
Fanie De Villiers 85 wickets @ 24.3
Courtney Walsh 519 wickets @ 24.4
Bhagwat Chandrasekhar 242 wickets @ 29.7

Pretty happy with the side. Knott and Constantine are both much better than their averages suggest. The Bradman effect must be taken into account when rating Constantine. De Villiers put in some spectacular performances in all conditions in a short career. Chandrasekhar and Walsh are both ATGs. A little quirk I like about this attack is that both Gregory and Constantine employed the short ball with great hostility and success. I also like how Knott is keeping to a medium-slow spinner as he kept to Underwood with distinction. The batting is superb with each batsman bringing unique strengths to the team. ATG players of swing, seam, bounce and spin are all available.

WELDONE

(without a batting order or averages provided, I have listed Weldone's selections in a possible order together with averages. The order was difficult with 3 specialist openers in the team. I put the openers in the top 3 spots in the order they were selected. The remaining batsmen were then allocated positions closest to their normal spot.)

W.G.Grace 1098 runs @ 32.3
Chris Gayle 7214 runs @ 42.2; 73 wickets @ 42.7
Herschelle Gibbs 6167 runs @ 41.9
Cheteshwar Pujara 5840 runs @ 48.7
Kumar Sangakarra w/k 12400 runs @ 57.4
Steve Waugh (Capt?) 10927 runs @ 51.1; 92 wickets @ 37,5
Shivnarine Chanderpaul 11867 runs @ 51.4
Ravindra Jadeya 1869 runs @ 35.3; 213 wickets @ 24.6
Mitchell Starc 1515 runs @ 22.3; 244 wickets @ 26.9
Kagiso Rabada 197 wickets @ 23.0
John Snow 202 wickets @ 26.7

I'll let the voting run for a couple of weeks before tallying the results.

Once again, thanks for all participants. As a novice at running a draft I learnt a lot from you all. I hope you all get on board any future draft that I might conduct.

Looked at a couple of the squads a bit more closely just now, hope to be able to rate them fully in just over 24 hours time.

Teuton

I found it really hard to decide between a lot of the teams since they are so close (5 legit contenders for top spot) and everyone has a lot of strengths and a slight weakness due to the nature of the draft. So tough calls had to be made

9 - Trundler: very well balanced team with stars in every area
8 - kingkallis: superstar bowlers,and a very even good top 5
7 - Line & Length: the best top 5, bowling a bit weaker
6 - andrewB: very well balanced team, just a few players with smaller resumes.
5 - weldone: great batting depth & 3 excellent quicks, but 3 openers and a spinner reliant on conditions
4 - JOJOXI: good depth across the line-up, needed more star power
3 - ataraxia: a couple of weak points in team
2 - honestbharani: great use of allrounders, suspect top order, Root hates batting at 3.

(I will do the ranking later, but you get the idea to which team my 9 points are allocated to)

KK and Teuton both have exceptional teams. Teuton's team has no weaknesses while KK got 2 of the 3 standout seamers. Torn between these 2. Can I give out 2 9s? Please?

9 - KingKallis. Top 5 is very good and grabbing Barnes and Davidson is a superb effort. Macartney was a great pick too. Best pace attack imo.

8 - Teuton. As was his Hill pick. Quality throughout.

7 - AndrewB. Big Cameron fan even though he cost me a draft. Well rounded team even if Cameron, Barnes and Donnelly didn't play a lot.

6- Line and Length. Batting mirrors Teuton's but bowling is just a step down. Decent effort overall though. Smith and Barrington, sign me up.

5 - Weldone. Good side but 2 #3s and 3 openers and 2 #5s. All individually good players though. Very good bowling. I'd have moved Grace down because opening wasn't a specialist position in his time.

4 - Honestbharani. Love the 3 all rounders. Should borrow a #3 from Weldone though.

3 - JOJOXI. 1 or 2 bigger names would've helped as Teuton said.

2 - ataraxia. No specialist #3 and CdG as a third seamer is pushing it imo. Not a bad side though.

Not a lot between the bottom 4 imo.

Trundler – 9 points - Like the pick of Chandrasekhar (You just beat me to him!), a solid pace attack too, might have been nice to have a 2nd seamer who excelled over an extended period but nonetheless a decent attack. A very nice opening partnership and a strong 3-5, Hazare a solid pick and in Younis and Williamson players who are potentially their countries best batsman. A great keeper in Alan Knott too.

Teuton – 8 points - A nicely balanced side with two gritty openers and some of the best openers the world has seen, a number 3 I don’t know much about in all honesty, a nice 4-6 and with Richardson having played at 3 regularly a nice top 4 adept at facing a relatively new ball and tough circumstances, a number 5 who is very adaptable allowing lower middle order to flourish. A solid pace attack on paper supported by a world class spinner and I guess in Tate could go to being a 2nd spinner if the conditions demanded. Perhaps influenced by lack of knowledge about McKenzie, Hill and Tate but probably rate a couple of the 3 and 4s higher individually but no major weaknesses in the side.

Line and Length - 7 points – Like the structure of this team a lot, just reading through it and looking at batting positions for some of the older players it does read really well. Barrington and Smith a really intimidating 3 and 4 too and whilst KP played most of his innings at 4 think he’d do a solid job at 5 and his average at 5 is solid if unspectacular. Don’t know an awful lot about Ironmonger – a good bowling average but a small sample size, players who can bowl spin in that lineup but question if any at a 2nd spinner quality. Solid if not fearsome bowling attack. McMillan a solid 4th pacer and whilst Bond had a short career think he’d look an even better pick if he was fitter for longer.

KingKallis/CricZo XI – 6 points - Big fan of the opening partnership and Crowe is a strong pick, as is Jayawardene (although his average in SENA is pretty modest). A solid spinner in Gibbs and in Barnes gives the bowling attack nice depth given his variety almost means you have 2 spinners, 4 seamers thanks to Barnes. Perhaps influenced by not seeing some of these players but don’t know a lot about Khan Mohammed and whilst he has a very good average, short career makes the 2 main seam bowlers in Barnes and Davidson look very strong, I might be wrong looking at other comments but its hard for me to think the same about the pace attack after those 2. Nonetheless a good spin attack with Barnes variety added and solid batting.

Andrew B – 5 points - A good batting line up, Donnely an interesting pick don’t know much about him but reading it sounds like he made a big impression although he had a limited Test career. Nonetheless the batting looks solid however Miandad played only 3 Test match innings at number 3 so will be interested to imagine how he would adapt. Bowlers down to number 10 seem all able to hold their own with the bat too. Nice depth of bowling options with 4 very capable seamers and Jayasuria supporting Warne in the spin department. Warne no doubt an All-Time Great, I wonder if any of the four seamers (despite all being very good) break into that bracket on bowling alone, although no doubt Philander’s average is impressive.

Ataraxia – 4 points - Engineer a tough one, with being young having a keeper also open looks iffy in a Test match but he did play most of his innings there. Nice batting especially from 3-6 despite its lack of ‘superstars’ (comparative to some other lineups). With de Grandhomme and Engineer in top 7 perhaps lack the depth of some other batting lineups. Probably one of the stronger spin attacks with Verity and O’Reilly, a true great in Dale Steyn to lead the fast bowling too, might have done with a 4th seamer but a tough one, hard to fit in 6 genuine bowling options, I myself had 2 spin options, 3 seam options but just threat that if it isn’t doing much for the spinners De Grandhomme whilst a good bowler perhaps not your strongest 3rd seamer.

Weldone – 3 points - Some great batsman but feels with Chanderpaul down at 7 he’s a bit shoehorned in and Gibbs at 3 rather then Pujara questionable too. No doubt some great draft picks in the batting but might have done better to replace number 3 and 7 (Gibbs/Chanderpaul) with a specialist 6 and 7 and move Pujara up to 3. John Snow a nice pick with the ball, Rabada and Starc with very good averages, whether they are yet ATG bowlers is questionable, although they may well be seen more fondly once their careers are in their swansong or even after it. Jadeja a solid spinner but as has been mentioned becomes a decent but unspectacular spinner if conditions are not suiting him.

HonestBharani – 2 points - Root no doubt has the talent but with his struggles at 3 is he a bit wasted there (Averages 38.12 from 49 innings there). Solid bowling with Imran Khan’s all round abilities meaning you pretty much have 4 out and out seamers and plenty of spin options.
Amazing batting depth, with Ames all the way down at 8 although arguably means you don’t get quite the best out of him with most of his runs from 5,6 and 7. Imran Khan at 7 too at his best with the bat is a scary thought too. Different angle provided by Bruce Reid is nice too. Although despite great depth batting feels a touch light in terms of ATG batsman aside from Aravinda da Silva. Would imagine this side might do very well on low-scoring pitches, the bowling to contend with most sides and the batting depth but question whether this lineup would put up 450/500 as much as other batting lineups.

All sides have their merits, and judging was a tough job.

9 points - Andrew B. An impressive batting line-up with good front-line bowlers and plenty of back-up if needed.

8 points - Kingkallis. An excellent first five in the batting order and a very good bowling attack.

7 points - Teuton. Great opening pair followed by a solid, if unspectacular middle order. A good bowling attack.

6 points - Weldone. Overloaded with batting talent, especially after the opening pair. (Having given the batting order for Weldone, I might have done him a disservice reading JOJOXI's comments). The bowling attack is solid.

5 points - Trundler. An excellent batting order but the bowling may be too reliant on Walsh and Chandresekhar.

4 points - Ataraxia. A very solid batting order but the two spinners leaves Steyn without an experienced pace partner..

3 points - Honestbharani. There are one or two questions about the batting. A strong pace attack supported by good spin variety.

2 points - JOJOXI. The middle order batting is solid and the bowling attack balanced but unspectacular.

When judging, I initially gave each team a score out of 10. Just 2 points covered the field and many positions in my order could easily be interchanged.

Apologies for the misunderstanding. My actual batting lineup is this:

1. Chris Gayle 7214 runs @ 42.2; 73 wickets @ 42.7

9- teuton - best batting, best spinner, decent pace.

8 - linelength - excellent batting. bowling holds its own, although star bowlers are not that outstanding.

7 - Honestbharani - excellent genuine allrounders lift his team in both departments

6 - kingkallis - batting is good all over. bowling has some weak spots but star bowlers are notable. kirmani's batting isn't the best.

5 - AndrewB - Passable batting. Warne and Philander lift the bowling attack to above-ordinary. Philander should bat above Streak.

4 - Jojoxi - really long tail. middle-order is excellent but this team lacks in almost all other depts.

3 - trundler - main bowlers are good, but support bowlers are not. batting lacks depth.

2 - Ataraxia - good batting but not a fan of selecting Azhar, good spinners but steyn doesn't have pace help. Grandhomme is a weaklink.

Whatever it takes!!!
AndrewB - Not sure of Miandad at 3 but otherwise a pretty good side, although bowling attack outside of Warne is a bit meh.

Ataraxia - Steyn, O Reilly and Verity in the same attack make it one of the better ones in the draft, but batting is a bit less comparatively. and CDG being the 3rd seamer is not a good look for any attack unless you are playing on a dustbowl.

HB- I like my side, I feel its one of the better draft efforts. I get the whole Root at 3 thing but I really do not see how its any lesser than any of the other sides. To each their own, I guess.

JoJo - Pretty goo and balanced side and the only question mark will be Rice as the 3rd seamer, juz like with Ataraxia. But I think this side is balanced better than Ataraxia's.

KK - Feel its the second best side in the draft. Cannot call out any immediate weakness, really. .

L&L - Best side in the draft for me. One ATG and a few great players in one side. Awesome drafting in the channel, LL. :)

Teuton - Awesome batting line up, not so sure about the bowling. Perhaps #3 in the draft, for me. Top 3 is standard stuff for Teuton in any draft these days, it seems, though. He is fast becoming the Bradman of CW drafts.

Trundler - A lot of good to great level players in the side, the batting especially is awesome and the bowling is balanced without being stand out. Gotta think hard on this but this side may well nudge out Teuton's for #3.

Weldone - really good side but way too many accumulators there. But in terms of balance, the only thing that makes this side fall outside the top 3 is the spin options, really.

8 - KK
7 - trundler

Teuton - 9 points: One of the best team of this draft! Fine bowling and solid top order backed by game changer middle & lower order.
Trundler - 8 points: Fine team but bowling loses out a few points in comparison of other bowling attacks. Fine fine team!
Line and Length - 7 points: Solid batting but cant say the same about bowling. Overall a decent team .
Andrew B - 6 points: Couple of good names but the rest are not going to change the entire game at their own.
JOJOXI - 5 points: Rice as 3rd seamer and Rhodes as an opener is tricky. Middle order is pretty solid hence 5 points.
HonestBharani - 4 points: Fine effort but van der Bijl as opener and no frontline spinner makes a bad XI.
Weldone - 3 points: Going with just 4 bowlers in a test match is a crime especially when you have Sangakkara in your team as a wicket keeper.
Ataraxia - 2 points: Bowling looks good but batting does not oozes the confidence for a top draft side.

Nourse and May fantastic, Clarke very good, Azharuddin and Fredericks decent. Definitely not the best batting side but not too bad I would feel.

If you consider Jadeja 0.5 a bowler, do you say the same about Lillee too?
