predict your test team in 3 years

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
On reflection Smith will probably still be there in 3 years, and I forgot Jhye Richardson completely

W Pukovski
M Renshaw
M Labuschagne
S Smith
K Patterson
C Green
A Carey +
P Cummins
M Starc
J Richardson
M Swepson

I'm keeping Starc over Hazelwood cos I think Hazelwood will become very hittable if he loses a yard of pace. Reckon Starc's angle and extra pace will keep him among the wickets

I like Head , but I think he has some limitations and Patterson is a better batsman.

Another guy who I think has the ability to kick on is Hilton Cartright.

International 12th Man
Latham (c) 31
Young 31

Williamson 33
Conway 32
G Phillips 27
Ravindra 24

Blundell 33

Boult 34
Jamieson 28
Henry 32
Duffy 29

Extended squad: McClure 29, N Smith 25, A Patel 35, Sheat 25.

Williamson has passed red ball captaincy to Latham to reduce workload. Taylor, de Grandhomme, Watling, Southee retired. Young switches to opening in 21-22 to avoid battling for the same spot as Conway, then Nicholls has too many failures and loses his test spot. Ravindra opens for NZ in white ball cricket but slots into an attacking middle order role for tests, and is the only spin option at home. Ferguson and Sears too many injuries. Henry Cooper, Finn Allen and Beckham Wheeler-Greenall and Adi Ashok dominate in Plunket Shield and are on the fringe of the test squad.

Very little change from now for me tbh, maybe a J Richardson in for a quick?

It’s difficult with England. An away Ashes series is often make or break (or at least break) for some players. I would currently think that Crawley, Sibley or Pope might have long Test careers ahead, but we’ll see what happens next winter.

this one is for home tests, with ajaz and A.N. Other getting a run as specialist asia spinners.

latham (c)

young
blundell

jamieson
sears

boult

could have gone conservative here and retained nicholls and southee but im gonna say nicholls, who always looks ugly when he's making low scores, will have a run of cheap outs and be dropped and southee will follow the trend of young kiwi debutants and call it a day early but only after a summer of his favourite hobby - routing subcontinental batsmen and some englishmen before hitting some sixes.

climate change will ensure it's either too droughty or too moist for specialist spinners so rachin gets the duties and mccullum takes over as coach and goes full macho with the two 150kph bowlers, jamieson and old man boult. ish sodhi will die in a tragic knife fight because baz has a soft spot for him and sodhi being selected doesn't suit the narrative im pulling out my arse here so we need ish removed from the plot.

post yours, narratives encouraged.
Latham (c) Young Williamson Conway Nicholls Blundell Santner Jamieson Ferguson Boult Henry

No point posting the obvious XI, because that never turns out to be the case. I'll instead figure in that Young is going to be shoehorned in as the next opener (which he would have been in Australia if he'd not been injured, instead of Blundell) and do OK at it. Henry Nicholls is all class and he'll find a way to still be there in 3 years, at which stage he'll only be 31. Jamieson being so decent with the bat allows the carrying of four seamers, which could be any combination of him Ferguson Boult Henry Duffy Sears. Jamieson/Ferguson/Boult/Henry feels like a very nice mix of bounce, pace, left arm and right arm swing.

And my wildcard is Santner improving his game enough to be a bonafide Test #7 who also finds a way to contribute with the ball. I appreciate that's probably in defiance of logic given his T20 diet at the moment, but I believe he wants it and he's professional enough to go away and achieve it. This would obviously be negated if Ravindra plays and offers part-time left-arm orthodox instead.

Otherwise I might slip G.Phillips in at 6, bump everyone down and not have a spinner, or Ravindra comes in to open and Young bats at six.

3 years is a very long time and to predict the team is going to take some serious guessing. There may be an under 19 player or two that may break the doors open. I have no doubt the following will be involved

Latham, Young, Conway, Kane, Nicholls, Blundell, Conway, Boult, Southee, Jamieson

I reckon the following five will be involved too

Ravindra, Sears, Sodhi and Cleaver (2nd wicket keeper)

Will check back in three years to see how off I was.

It's the type of guess where even if you get a lot of the names right, the batting order could look hilarious with 3 years hindsight.

I want a tearaway (Sears of Fergusson) and best way to fit that in is with 4 seamers (IMO), so N Smith is my hail mary.

Phillips - both his batting and spin bowling are at interesting stages, but can't predict him 3 years out. Too many unknowns.
F Allen's (red ball) reputation taken a hit this spring.
Left arm seamer missing is my biggest concern. If Nuttall or Wheeler could get fit they could get an O'Brien/Gillespie like late career run of a few years in the first choice test X1 containing 4 seamers.
Spinners: TBH Ravindra's current record is awful, but NZfan must be persuasive ..... Foxcroft would be my other one to watch if his qualification isn't scuppered.
