***Official*** West Indies in New Zealand 2013/14

it was really heavy. It's stopped now but I don't know how quick they'll be able to dry the outfield, and how soon they'll have to give the teams to get ready.

We need to hear the umpires actually setting a time before we get excited.

Earliest I could see is 5.45.

Which would be max 5 overs. Probably less.
Right so close of play is 6? Not that they have to be back on at 6?

I'm not entirely sure but close of play has been at 6 every day. Well, 5.30 is the actual close time but the extra half an hour is always taken.

5.26pm The umpire have made their way out to the middle to assess conditions. The main covers are still on the pitch. Should have word momentarily as to whether the match will continue or not

Drumroll please

In hindsight McCullum & Rutherford had the right idea (just terrible execution) - needed to finish it by tea given the rain was widely forecast.

Can play till 6.41. So have till about 6.11 to make a decision. Umps will be under pressure here - even if the ground is dry enough to play, light will not be good.

Just call it off. I can't take this anymore.

This result will set New Zealand back for years to come. The team will not recover mentally from this. No matter how many runs they score first innings, or how low a total they bowl a side out for first innings, they will never ever win another test match against top 8 opposition. It's a sad fact, but it's true.

Give some credit to the opposition ffs.

No they had completely the wrong idea. If they'd used their brains, batted sensibly and pushed the score up to 60/2 after 20 overs, then New Zealand would've been perfectly placed to launch when the weather started to close in. As it was we'd lost too many wickets by the end and Taylor and Anderson had no choice but to bat sensibly and hoped that the weather held.

And once again, New Zealand shouldn't have enforced the follow-on and we're paying for that now. The only bright spot for me as that I put a bet on the draw at the end of day 2... Though if I'd waited until day 3 I probably could've gotten crazy money, so even that's pretty irritating.

Happy with Sodhi's performance. I think the leg break and googly is all he needs. Strangely he got less turn today than he did on other days. Perhaps it was the end he was bowling at (he switched ends probably in part because all the commentators badgered him into it in their interviews with him).

I would imagine that WI will be getting footage of that googly and trying to come up with means of picking it.

Obviously his major issue is his accuracy but his second innings econ rate was highly respectable.

Congratulations to the West Indies. A well deserved and honourable draw.

Some thoughts on the match - bit limited since I had to check the score sporadically on cricinfo in the past two days.

-Enforcing the follow on is almost always the wrong move. The bowlers had 62 overs under their belt - give them the afternoon off and belt a few runs or collapse or whatever. Bowlers are not the motorcycles batsmen captains always seem to think they are and while batting again would have lost us overs I'll take fresh bowlers over more overs every time. Even with all the overs in the world exhausted bowlers won't trouble anyone, and now we have to carry tired bowlers into the second test match.
-We can't complain too much about Bravo's luck and the rain considering we did the same thing to South Africa with KW.
-The West Indies need to bring in some new bowlers. Calling Rampaul up would be good. Last I looked in detail Sammy is on one leg and Gabriel is itstl. I would be wary of playing two spinners since I think KW, Taylor, Anderson and Watling prefer spin to pace and have good records in Asia. Two spinners will probably keep in check/remove Fulton and Rutherford though
-The West Indies absolutely must bat first in the next test match unless they're playing in a paddock. Kill the New Zealand bowlers while they're down.
-This game has panned out sooooo Plunket Shield. Nip out the oppo/their top order quick smart only for the number eight and the surviving top order bat to stay in forever.
-I can't be too harsh on Wagner since domestically he has always been a slightly wayward attack swing bowler and now he's being asked to bang it in and back up Southee and Boult. Three fast medium opening swing bowlers in an attack always presents the danger of being both very samey and the bloke who has to bowl first change being unsuited to the job. Bracewell, Henry and Wheeler should come in for Southee/Boult only because of this. If Wagner is to be let go, someone in the mould of Gillespie, Milne, Bennett, Bartlett etc should play. Anyone who isn't primarily a fast medium swing bowler basically. We miss Iain O'Brien sometimes.
-For all the promise I read Sodhi showed, he still got carted most of the time. I would give him the series but with our opening bowlers we can get away with a spinner who doesn't tear through sides but builds pressure and keeps one end nailed down. The best exponent of that has made himself unavailable though and I can't think of someone else who fits that description. And no Jeets doesn't.
-These are the games which hurt the most for the fans. It feels like a loss, and makes you wonder whether there will be any pay off.

edit: in saying that we made a fair effort for a wonky batting unit and an attack with two and a half (depending on which wagner turns up) test standard specialist bowlers.

6.05pm Once again the rain has stopped and once again the groundstaff are out. We will have a better frame on things in just a few minutes. Also just learned that the covers are coming off

LOL, this is just hilarious if you were a neutral or a cricket god with a hatred for NZ cricket. Rest assured, the sun will be beaming when the players walk out with NZ having 1 over to get 33 runs.
