The Wheel is Forever
Him hitting 100 is actually damning evidence against him. It shows that he isn't necessarily out of form...he is just unable to perform in conditions where you need footwork to survive.

I agree, at home, no pressure for the players and more importantly India need to win a few games to create that faux scent that they actually might do something in the World Cup.
You'd think that India's woeful form would mean that there's loads of pressure on the players. And I think you underestimate how difficult an Indian crowd can be on its cricketers. India dare not fail in front of them this close to the World Cup. I'd say the pressure is greater on India at home than it was in South Africa, because few expected them to compete in South Africa.

I wouldn't say he's unable to. He's only failed to cross 40 on 3 occasions in 10 innings in Australia. He averages 54podd there. And you generally need footwork to score runs against Australia in Australia.

I think his hundred shows the gap between domestic and international level. Hamish Marshall is a prime example of how one player can perform so badly in international cricket yet the next day go and score 140 odd runs for his domestic side. He has done it a few times now.

No, not really.

He's out of form, he was mentally shot in South Africa.

Agreed. Sehwag looked lost - the way Pathan looked lost - when he was batting in South Africa. He should be dropped against the West Indies.

Sehwag is not going to get dropped even though the so called 'star' batsmen aren't performing.Play for a cricket club in Scotland called West of Scotland and we had Badrinath in 2005 and Barrington Rowland in 2006 as overseas pro's and they look fine players.Anyways India now seem to have a decent seam attack something which they didn't have 5 years ago.west Indies will comfortably win this series as India's batsmen are in disarray.Anyone else think that commentators drool over the so called brilliant batting line-up when the likes of tendulkar, ganguly, laxman and sehwag haven't performed consistently for a while.

Whatever it takes!!!
Well, the Indian squad is to be announced today. Let us have some last minute guesses.

My squad would be:

Sachin
Sourav
Gambhir
Dravid
Badrinath
Kaif
Dhoni
Kaarthick
Kumble
Harbhajan
Zaheer
Sreesanth
Joginder Sharma
Ajit Agarkar

Laxman is not fit enough for ODIs and can't be useful anywhere but 3. Kaif needs to bat at 3 as well to bring the best to the side, for he often wastes overs in the middle order but he is a brilliant fielder and we need that. Pathan hasn't shown any great improvement yet. Sehwag NEEDS to be dropped. Raina NEEDS more time out as well. VRV Singh bowls too many no-balls and not sure if he is ODI material anyway. RP Singh is doing well in Ranji but he doesn't swing the ball much and doesn't hit the seam much either. Only thing he has got going for him is that he at times gets the ball to bounce a little more than normal. But he is not great in the field and is horrible with the bat. Bose has been in outstanding form and must be rewarded. But I guess they would want Agarkar to get another chance. If the squad is a 15 member squad, then I would add Rohit Sharma, just to give him the chance to be around the better players of India and hopefully, learn from it.

And my XI for the first game would be:

Sachin
Gambhir
Sourav
Badrinath
Rahul
Dhoni (wk)
Joginder Sharma
Harbhajan
Kumble
Zaheer
Sreesanth

But I won't be surprised if they rest Kumble for the first game and play Kaarthick. Improves our fielding and we have Sourav and Sachin to do the 5th bowlers' job along with Badrinath who does bowl quite a bit at the Ranji level.

Ganguly and Tendulkar should be the opening pair. Dravid, Dhoni and Karthik should return in the middle-order obviously. Kumble and Harbhajan as the spinners, though Powar has been treated like crap. Zaheer and Sreesanth should remain and so should Agarkar - he has bowled well over the past few seasons and was our best bowler in the West Indies ODIs earlier this year. Munaf will be dropped for poor fitness and Yuvraj is almost ready.

Laxman and Kaif are the top contenders for the #3 spot. Kaif is a superior fielder and rotater of the strike but Laxman is experienced and dangerous against the Aussies (who we will have to conquer if we go all the way, which should be the aim). Kaif struggled in SA and continued to struggle for UP; Laxman did fine in SA and just scored 70-odd against Punjab. Kaif has really been wasted by the management but at this point Laxman is the man in form. Laxman is my pick, but I won't be extremely disappointed if they opt for Kaif.

Uthappa or Gambhir should make it as the reserve opener. Gambhir did slightly better in the Top End series and deserved to play in SA, but Uthappa has been amazing in the Ranji Trophy (averaging 70 @ SR of 80 at the top of the run charts). He has also performed well for India A in the past few tournaments. Both are good fielders but Uthappa is my choice.

Badrinath should definitely make the squad. He has impressed for India A in UAE and Australia; for TN over the past several seasons; for South Zone, etc. Superb fielder and excellent temperament. Badrinath for sure - absolute travesty if he doesn't make it.

Now, the all-rounder's slot. Pathan just took four wickets against Tamil Nadu so he may be striking form again - should he be retained? Nope. Baroda have qualified for the semis and Pathan should look for more match practice there. If he does well, bring him back against Sri Lanka. Otherwise, you have Joginder Sharma, who has been impressive with bat and especially ball for Haryana. He needs to be introduced now as an insurance policy for Pathan.

Reports indicate that this will be a 15-man squad, so I'll give the final spot to Mongia. He impressed against Australia and didn't get too many opportunities after that. He provides additional flexibility because he is a genuine part-time option and allows India to field six batsmen with full confidence. Raina may still get the nod though.

Let's see what the selectors decide ...

If you're going by domestic form, you can't go past Joginder Sharma and Gagandeep Singh. They have been doing what Bose did this year consistently for several seasons.

The squad will probably be a 15-man squad but there's no way Sharma should find a place. He's had an awesome debut season and I'm a huge fan of his - check my sig - but this is not the time to give players exposure. We need to focus on WC preparations and nothing else. The selectors should consider Sharma after the World Cup.

Indian Squad for First 2 ODIs

Dravid (c), Tendulkar (vc), Ganguly, Uthappa, Gambhir, Raina, Dhoni, Karthik, Harbhajan, Powar, Joginder, Zaheer, Sreesanth, Agarkar, RP Singh

- According to rumors, Tendulkar will bat in the middle order
- Raina has scored 282 in his last 5 domestic innings (pretty good), but apparently it was Chappell's backing that saved him
- Kumble rested (temporarily I think) due to poor fitness - he missed the final round of the Ranji Trophy
- Laxman dropped due to poor fitness and fielding - his WC chances look dead now
- Uthappa, Gambhir, Joginder, RP Singh return after good domestic seasons
- Harbhajan and Powar to battle for the off-spinner's role I suppose
- The only real disappointment is Badrinath's exclusion ... overall, good selection

Comparing the squad selected to mine....

Hmmm…. Uthappa instead of Rohit Sharma. Not a bad choice, given Uthappa’s form. Raina instead of Kaif. Doesn’t really matter. Powar instead of Kumble…. Interesting. RP Singh instead of Badrinath? That is just confusing. We certainly don’t need so many bowlers, surely…

Haha, some cricket reporters in India are so ********. One guy asks, "What about Joginder Singh?". The response, "He's more of a batsman than a bowler."

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
If newer players have to be tried at this stage, surely it means that experiments (whatever they were) didn't actually work. Each time a player is dropped like a Pathan or some one else, or some one is brought back, it shows that the selectors, team management got it wrong earlier at some point(s) more often than not.

The team selection is a bit funny as well with so many bowlers put in there (like HB mentioned). The only reason I can come up with is that they are seriously considering Dhoni as a specialist batsman while playing Karthik as a keeper in the side. Given that the Indian batsmen have not been consistent to say the least, there can be an urge to play Dhoni as a specialist batsman. However, it does not make sense to play a Karthik as a keeper. It would be better to include some other batsman in the side instead personally for me.
