Bringing the game into disrepute is a nebulous and non specific grandfather clause, it doesn't necessarily imply or require cheating.

Where is your evidence for the underlined?

The only inquiry into the incident (by CA) found no such thing. Smith saw Warner and Bancroft in discussion and felt they were "up to something" but didn't enquire further. That's hardly cheating or even foreknowledge of cheating. He misled officials to protect his players after the fact, not before it. There is no suggestion he had specific foreknowledge of the plan.

The CA report is weasel worded but the Wiki explains the illogic of the authoritarian bureaucrats at CA in plainer English. I did try to supply links but was unable to post with them.

This was CA's version of the Salem witch trials. If they're going to dish stuff like this out for ball tampering, players really should be adequately represented at proper impartial tribunals.

Smith didn't do anything wrong, he was banned by those naughty little buggers at CA for nothing.

He cried at the press conference at the injustice of it all, he's been hard done to and its naughty of those English fans to boo Lord Steven of Smith.

There is complete denial from most Aussies about what happened.

Your team was caught cheating. Some players decided it was OK to take sandpaper on to the pitch to alter the ball.

Some senior players coerced a junior player into doing it as there was less chance of getting caught as nobody would suspect him.

When you were caught instead of manning up, you denied it.

The team brought shame on the country and the game of cricket.

The key personnel then said how sorry they were and cried their little eyes out at press conferences.

And you wonder why opposition fans boo your team.

The bowlers knew what was going on, most of whom are still in the team.

Good old Darren Lehman, who by the way actually encouraged fans to give one of our players a rough time, how sporting of him, knew what was going on.

And we still don't know how long you had been cheating for.

I've been watching Ashes battles for decades and for the most part you've been the better team, often significantly so.

But at least we play the game by the rules.

So that's a no then. You have no evidence that Smith has ever cheated (there's certainly nothing to indicate such in the load of bollocks above). Got to wonder why you proclaim it so confidently?

I'm not in denial. The Aussies were caught ball tampering once, in a tit for tat with the Saffers. A warning/fine or a one match suspension for the couple of players involved would have been consistent. Ball tampering wasn't uncommon for decades leading up to this and I have never been deluded enough to believe the Aussies were any sort of exception.

It's history (ball tampering) didn't begin at Cape Town in 2018 and there's no small amount of irony and hypocrisy being called "cheats" for it by a pom. 8-)

Smith's biggest mistake was fronting the press conference in an effort to protect a junior player. Though I admire him for what he tried to do, he should have just laid low about it like other captains in similar situation.

The cliche that Aussies "always" cheat isn't just a massive and hypocritical exaggeration. It's more like a "thought stopper". Brainwashing cults use them as a way to get their members to accept delusion in a way that bypasses critical thought. Well done. 8-)

Yes, this formed the basis of the CA claim that he knew of a "potential" plan by his players to ball tamper. Which is just a weaselly way of saying that as far as they could find, he had no direct knowledge of it at all.

Though in reality I think most players and coaching staff were aware. This makes them little different to other teams with fast bowlers (especially where reverse swing is concerned) and especially the team we were playing who had been pinged for it more than once.

But it doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks. When you're talking about ruining players careers over it, what you can sufficiently demonstrate is more to the point. In a proper impartial proceeding many of CA's "findings" would have had them laughed out of the place. To this extent I have long admired the way the Indian players and board stand up for their players.
