Jennings is the nervous kid, right?

That's a pretty good side tbh (though I know nothing of Bess). Buttler at 7 could come to haunt India.

No. They have about 3 batsmen and are looking at how many wicket keepers and allrounders might be able to plug the gaps.

I doubt either will play - chances are they will pick a similar side to the last test against Pakistan, in which they switched to a much more conventional set up than the Moeen at 8 strategy (even though I like that one).

Cook
Jennings
Root
Malan
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Woakes
Bess
Broad
Anderson

Probably Sam Curran for twelfth because you've got to do your time in the high visibilty tabard young man if you want to get anywhere in this line of work

The weakest player in that team is Jennings, who has only just been recalled, so I guess he's in.

On form they might recall Rashid ahead of Bess, and it would be a pretty strange time to do it given this is Rashid's first white-ball-only season and Bess had a good game in the last test. Still it would be a fine oppertunitiy to kick the county game in the nuts again, so it's plausible.

If it were up to me, I'd kick Jennings, make Buttler or Bairstow open and play Ben Foakes at #7. My reasons for doing this are not entirely cricket related
If it's to do with Jennings actually bro g south African then I completely agree.
But I would put gubbins in to open instead

They are when our established pair have forgotten how to play swing. Vijay doesn't leave as many balls as he did when he was in his purple patch on away tours and Pujara doesn't attack as many balls as he did when he was on his own prime. Jury's out on Rahul and lol @ Dhawan. 4 openers sounds just about right.

I'm apprehensive about that: they may keep Dhawan and drop either KL or Pujara.

In other news, it appears that they are looking at Srikar Bharat as the next keeper in line for test matches;
he's retained in the India A side for the four day games against South Africa A.
In the limited overs quadrangular series with South Africa A and Australia A, they have Samson and Ishan Kishan as the keepers.

They will start with Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara but I am expecting Pujara to have a torrid series so wouldn't be surprised if Rahul replaces him by the 3rd or 4th Test

India came this early for this series and are playing just one Four Day game? WTF? And I thought they learned some lessons from the South Africa series earlier

I don't think we should put too much stock into the number of practice games they play. At least they haven't shown up barely a week before the first Test.

Also, these days, Boards are notorious for giving visiting sides the complete opposite of the conditions they'd get during the matches. Kohli said before the SA tour that simulating the expected conditions in the nets was a better approach than playing practice games. As far as I'm concerned, if they fail on this tour, I won't blame a lack of preparation.

Agreed about the conditions but the match practice certainly helps..but then again, India's Test specialists have had that game time with Ishant and Pujara playing in County and Vijay and Rahane playing the India A game

Yeah, it does matter. Makes far more sense to have three or so first class games. A modern way is to tour a neighbouring country for a test series, like England tours Bangladesh before visiting India.
