At least we don't have to start the doom and gloom thread yet.

Hopefully...
Suppose but 100+ run loss is comprehensive enough.

Last time in PE we had Steyn's reverse. What else can we bring to the party there. Probably be very similar strategies to here.

Of course we got to bat much better. Especially Elgar, Amla, Faf.

While we batted poorly that first SA innings, I also think that we let Aus have 50+ runs to many from poor bowling first innings. Feel that we keep Aus to 280 or so and the game changes. Seniors need to stand next match. I'm unsure if we keep de Bruyn and or Morkel? Morkel in particular can't keep bowling some of the dross he has if we gonna play a 4 man attack.

It seems ages ago since we put a complete team batting performance together like we did for so long.

I don't think they going to leave out Morkel.

I reckon Bavuma will come in for de Bruyn.

This is south africa best chance to reduce runs required why not play some shots against these so called spinners

This makes me think of the good ole days... when we had Smith, Amla, Kallis, ABdV + others that guaranteed 400+ almost every match. But them days is gone, for now. But at least the bowling keeps going....

This is hilarious. Who the hell is going to go out to the grounds to watch like 10 minutes of cricket when it's down to the last wicket? Just concede the game overnight.

Agree with both. For emotional reasons (retirement and so close to 300 wickets) Morkel will still play, and De Bruyn's gritty 30-odd isn't enough to displace Bavuma, who specialises in those.

Starc though ineffective against top order is very effective against tail enders. Not a bad addition to the team tbh as few handy runs by tail enders can swing the game in their favor which made a difference in last South Africa series.

Things not looking good for SA this series. I was expecting the batting order to learn a few things from the Ind series and had even expected SA to win 2-1. The prediction looking awfully wrong here.

Border is the club patron I believe.

From the website:

Australian Players

Player Era (whilst at Valley)

J.W. McLaren 1911/12

O.E. Nothling 1928/29

A. Hurwood 1929/30 – 30/31

D. Tallon 1946/47

A.R. Border 1980/81 – 93/94

K.C. Wessels 1982/83 – 85/86

G.M. Ritchie 1984/85 – 86/87

M.L. Hayden 1992/93 – 93/94, 96/97 – 08/09

S.G. Law 1994/95 – 95/96

U.T. Khawaja 2012/13 -

Could pick a pretty decent batting lineup out of that mob:

Wessels
Hayden
Khawaja
Law
Richie
Border
Tallon

Much slimmer pickings from the bowling talent though. Feldman and Wildermuth currently playing for QLD.
Yeah, I think TOTAB might bat four in that line up

Will be interesting to see what they do if Steyn is fit for the third test . Do they still morkel just cause of his retirement?

WD SA on taking this to day five. Would love to see a TOTAB-Thommo stand take it to the wire tomorrow before siippy’s heart gets broken.

Just because he is better than everyone else against the tail does not necessarily mean he is ineffective against the top order
