It didn't cost us admittedly but I'm kinda annoyed Starc didn't bowl like this against England's tail. He's had the capability to do this, but hasn't really clicked.

Starc not taking top-order wickets is such a CW meme.
Starc's % of tailender wickets is close to 31%. Anecdotally this is only a little more than the average for front line pace men. Its in in line with Akram's percentage. What it means is both bowlers are so effective at removing the tail it perversely taints their reputation. All sides want runs from their tail. When Starc blasts them out it leaves a side short of runs and effectively deprives the selectors of playing a 5th bowler should they wish to do so. In that way Starc, as Akram before him, benefits his side by undermining the confidence of both opposition players and selectors.

Nathan Lyon everyone. So much help for him on this wicket but he just couldn't do the job. Very much like Ashwin in the 2nd test.

The SA batsmen need to better at shielding the tail from the starc. You know he doesn't have the stamina for long spells so you can farm the strike.

Both ab first innings and qdk this last innings haven't been very smart about it.

Nathan Lyon continues his mediocrity. Can't take wickets outside Australia, Bangladesh or sometimes India.

What a terrific 4 Tests Mitch Marsh has had on his return. Got the tough runs in the 1st innings which were pivotal in setting up the match and got the decisive wicket yesterday. Would be behind only Starc in being Australia's best player this Test.

Can only think of two occasions in modern times when Australia needed one wicket to win going into the final day of a Test:

*Against the West Indies in Perth 09/10 when the Windies needed less than 50 to win iirc and were still a slim chance of victory
*Against Pakistan in 1998/99 when Australia demolished the hosts (Stuart MacGill's first really big Test match performance) and won by an innings.

Or first innings in SA.
A mere aberration. Note how he was fiddled with by the SA A batsmen in the warm up as well and his captain had to bowl part time leggies to do the job for him (similar to what was happening last night).

Looks like Warner had de Kock in his face on the way up the race into the sheds at tea.

Footage shows the WPNCOS rightly intervening to calm things down.

I noticed as both sides were walking off at Tea that as QDK was putting his bat and gloves down on the boundary there was words between him and Smith (and perhaps others?)

Really don't know why Warner seems to have consciously reverted back to his boofhead behaviour of his early years after staying out of trouble for a couple of years and his career and leadership aspirations prospering. How can he be trusted to be captain of a Test side if he's going to lose it like this?
