Is there any hope left for Joe Root; the batsman?

He's easily the worst of the fab 4, but I guess there is hope. It's just a mental thing which he needs to work on. A home series against India will help.

He is still England's best batsman and should be at 4. The problem is those batting above him
Ian Chappell: Why wouldn't you bat at No. 3? | Cricket | ESPNcricinfo

New order all a bit hit and myth, Ian Chappell says

"Better to come in at one for not many than three for very few." When you don't have a prototype No.3, it's logical to bat your best player in that spot.
Of course, this entirely countered by the opinion of Martin Crowe about batting 4.

"Worst of a highly elite group of batsmen, half of whom are already nailed on ATGs and all of whom have a fair shot at getting into their country's all-time XI" is basically praising with faint damn though.

Gonna be stealing that at some point.

How is Joe Root easily worse than Kane Williamson? He averages more in all three formats and has a higher strike rate in two of them. Yes, Kane would be more likely to make his countries all time eleven. But that is because England's test history goes back a lot longer, they have traditionally had a much stronger side, and they play more test matches.

Ahhh, the ol' Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Kane Williamson or Sunil Narine, who's better debate?

The problem with him playing at three is it opens up a gap at four, and vice versa, the problem with playing him at four opening up a berth at three.

Root should play at whatever position he feels most comfortable in, and the rest of the team should play around that.
Ian Chappell can go jump into the large water body that is nearest to him.

Root is a beast, the problem is the people around him suck balls and he's burdened with the captaincy. Feels like he's one of those guys whose only enemy is himself and the quality of bowling is almost irrelevant.

If England can just find some stability he'll be awesome again imo. Would be great if he could do it on his own but it's a team game after all.

His team’s failings don’t give him a free pass on his own.

Yeah how come he can score 50s-60s at will but can’t go past that? Not really sure it has anything to do with the team. It’s mental/ physical issue than anything else. I read it somewhere he always had issues with the back. Sort of like Michel Clarke may be?

Of course, which is why my post kind of implied that I don't think he's good enough to overcome this with the burden of captaincy. Not yet at least.

There are probably a hundred other things at play but that could be one. The problems started earlier but have really gone to ridiculous levels since he took over from Cook.

Root has only scored 3 test centuries away from in England and Wales in 32 tests and has the easier option of longer series with more time to look at bowlers who get tired/injured.
Williamson has scored 10 test centuries away from NZ in 35 tests despite many of those being in two match series.

Overall for the last 5 years

Root 62 tests - average of 53
Williamson 40 tests - average of 63
