Agreed that its a weak team although there's nothing wrong with judging players based on aesthetics IMO.

No it's not.

Before on this board we've had people make XIs of players that they like, players that they most like watching etc.

It's just one of those activities cricket fans do.

Hating spinners, hating people making XIs of players that excite them... the **** is going on with Cricket Chat atm.

Go run home to your dolly then. I think it's a stupid idea. So what

They don't stick them in All Time World XI threads though, and if they do they get chastised. I just think the timing of it with cricinfo doing an ATWXI, and them being posted in this thread I suppose, muddies the waters a bit.

I never had a great problem with them anyway; I just had a laugh at how typical of Chappell it was to do a thrill-a-minute XI.

Why

Why is CI delayed in publishing their World XI ?

Any thoughts ?

Methinks it may be arguments over Sachin, Imran, Murali, perhaps even the wkeeper issue (Knott / Gilchrist )

There's no way Sachin won't be in it. It's Cricinfo

lol.. wud make interesting reading in the comments section though.. :p

That said, I think that spot at #4 and #5, you could pick between any of Sachin, Lara, G Chappell, Viv Richards, Ponting, Steve Waugh, Border, Miandad, Hammond, Barrington, Pollock etc. Really won't make a real difference to the batting strength of the side if you take any of these as your 2 IMO..

Id like Hammond/Border/Chappeli in there but they won't get past Sachin and Richards

Border? Thats pretty interesting. Always felt he was a little below the likes of Hammond, Chappell, Sachin and Richards.
It's mostly bias that I think Border should be in there - Fairly happy to admit that though. Still think he's incredibly underrated in most circles though.

As someone else mentioned Chappell's XI was interesting because it was a reminder of just how awesome a team you can make without recourse to the usual suspects. I've been playing around the last few days with different combinations based on that idea, and have thought a few times that against my "standard" all-time XI, a few of the teams would be well and truly capable of holding their own and getting the odd win against them.

You could do a reverse of Chappell's team and have the "Solid/Metronome XI" and it could be an awesome team that would equally have the potential to knock off any XI - names like Boycott, Barrington, Dravid, Kallis, McGrath, Ambrose, Grimmett etc etc.

Not positive about Sachin and Richards tbh. The team that the readers pick will have them, for sure, but going by the All Time XIs selected for each country, whoever's selecting them seems to love picking blokes from yesteryear over modern players, like with Trumper and Morris getting in over Hayden, and Fredricks getting in over Dujon, when I'm pretty sure both would've romped it in in the readers pick. Not saying that those guys didn't have a case to be selected, obviously, just that the selectors may well feel like they have to do something a bit different to what the general public thinks.
